I've handed out about 25 tubes over the years and patched dozens more (or more accurately done all the hard work for fools without equipment).
Mind you I can't condemn too much, I punctured 50 miles from home today, only to find my pump doesn't actually work and the town I was riding up on was devoid of a bike shop. Had to suffer the ignominy of hanging around for my gf to home and pick me up. In such situations I advise drowning one's sorrows in coffee, cake and beer in that order.
