It would be nice if the party at fault paid for the damage, yes. I think it was pretty shitty the kid didn't pay for damage to andy.w's car. Being a realist though... I'd probably just get over it.
I was crashed into by a drunk guy in an uninsured car (no witnesses except his mate in the passenger seat). He was so pissed he actually admitted liability (signed on the spot) and gave his real name and address! The police paid him a visit later, had a chat, but that's it.
I paid for my repairs.
