are there any non-campaging groups that offer insurance, with other benefits, like legal advice?
basicly i want something with all the frills of lcc or ctc membership, with out the campagining, which i'm not really into.
I think they're called insurance companies....

So you want your cake AND eat it Chris?

One to take on the chin i guess. You were unlucky, and did the right thing. Hope the kid learned something about driving his car/lorry.
Fixed
Now apply that statement to any incident where the car/lorry was at fault.

I think they all do, though haven't had a policy since I ditched the van a few years ago...

i thought they only covered legal fees if you had to go to court, not the consultations on what you should do.

Oh, why not, if I may ask?

The LCC has a dedicated legal advice helpline run by Levene's. I'd have to look up what the others have.

Most compensation lawyers operate on a 'no win, no fee' basis. AFAIK you're very unlikely to have to pay lawyers' fees, anyway, if you're not in the wrong in a collision, but someone with legal knowledge please correct me if that's wrong.
We consider the initial legal advice essential as a membership benefit, because it can be a massive hurdle to people to gather up the courage to pursue a case in the first place.

Yeah you might be right - I thought some gave legal blah if you paid a bit extra, but there's a good chance I'm wrong. I think it's Butterworths who do the CTC insurance so you could go to their website and read if they offer it.

a mixture of selfishness apathy and nihilism.

Selfishness is well-catered for through membership benefits--you can easily get the membership fee back through discounts in bike shops alone, not to mention the third party insurance and free legal advice. You can just sit back while others do the campaigning.
Cycle campaigning organisations don't try to change the world--they are largely single issue campaigners who work on things that are both good and eminently achievable, so that even if you're apathetic about things in general you can still believe in promoting cycling.
Don't know about nihilism.

I CHALLENGE any of you to cause £10 Million in damages. Whilst I know anyone probably could in terms of legal fees and blame culture, I have this perfect image of someone hitting a car into a buses path which then tumbles and flattens a grenade factory or something. Tiny bike causing catastrophic damage. Haha.

I think there are some forum members to whom perhaps you shouldn't issue that challenge ... ;)

CTC, British Cycling and LCC all offer liability insurance included in membership. Your household insurance may well have this as well. CTC and British cycling also cover personal accident to you so if you are injured you get money. CTC certainly also gives free legal assistance.

What? You think the car/lorry driver would pay for damage to the bike?
What planet do you live on?
(plus cars/lorries tend not to fall over at the lights)
-
• #96
What if that person couldn't afford to pay?
Same as when you drive a car without insurance and crash into someone and can't afford to pay.

If you got the right information and witnesses his insurance would. But my point being that if a car/lorry caused any damage to a bike either by accident or intent then everyone would be screaming to get some sort of compensation. And I would agree. Thus meaning I would expect the same reaction if a cyclist caused some damage to someones car.

They get arrested for driving without insurance?
-

It would be nice if the party at fault paid for the damage, yes. I think it was pretty shitty the kid didn't pay for damage to andy.w's car. Being a realist though... I'd probably just get over it.
They get arrested for driving without insurance?
No. Sadly they can just drive away.I was crashed into by a drunk guy in an uninsured car (no witnesses except his mate in the passenger seat). He was so pissed he actually admitted liability (signed on the spot) and gave his real name and address! The police paid him a visit later, had a chat, but that's it.
I paid for my repairs.

I agree.
Since living in London I noticed a lot of cyclists riding irresponsibly with little regard to other road users. The attitude on this forum seems to place the cyclist as the victim and as drivers mindless death dealers. Yet we run red lights, use tiny Knog lights as illumination and have only have one working brake?* It seems to be heavily weighted for form rather than function.
*I know this doesn't apply to everyone
