Selfishness is well-catered for through membership benefits--you can easily get the membership fee back through discounts in bike shops alone, not to mention the third party insurance and free legal advice. You can just sit back while others do the campaigning.
Cycle campaigning organisations don't try to change the world--they are largely single issue campaigners who work on things that are both good and eminently achievable, so that even if you're apathetic about things in general you can still believe in promoting cycling.
Don't know about nihilism.
