  • won't work.

  • I'll get it out. I have experience in these matters :-)

  • caustic soda is plainly the way to go.
    simple and easy.
is you use warm water, wahey ! the seat post will be dribbling out of your frame like a torrent of liquefied loveliness :)

  • no, it's not a fucking joke, it's the way to remove a fucked alloy post from a steel frame.

believe me, I've had experience in these matters.

I believe you, am sure it works, and am sure that if you were doing it it would be a fairly safe operation.

  • Try putting oven cleaner around the edge of the seat post. It contains a small amount of caustic soda, but enough to eat away the corrosion that has fused it into the frame. Leave it for a while and capillary action will draw it into the gap and hopefully free the post. Worth a shot atleast?

  • as a final resort i will try the caustic soda method ,i know my seat post is aliminium , but am not 100% sure if my frame is steel or could it be a mixture of metals.

  • Oven cleaner is the safest bet in my opinion as it contains a very low concentration of caustic soda and will eat away at the oxide before the metal, hence freeing the post from the frame. Anything with cutting is a higher risk incase you slip and take a slice out of some frame tubing (it's quite a fiddly job!).

  • Coca cola. That shit dissolves everything - i was told to use it to budge seized BB from alu frame.

Failing that the sawing approach platini mentions is workable.

  • will coca cola or oven cleaner damage steel frame

  • coca cola never damaged steel or nowadays alu cans that it's sold in. It'll affect/effect (one for the grammar'tards to sort out) the corrosion though.

  • p.s. All cola soaking done at you own risk though ;)

  • affect :-)

  • started caustic soda method today and is working very well, hopefully in a couple days it will be gone,

ps . ive got a hole in by bottom bracket just wanted to know what people use to cover the hole.

  • Bottom bracket liner http://www.classiclightweights.co.uk/hintsandtips2.html

There is an article about dissolving seatposts on this site too.

  • have been doing the caustic soda for about 3 days now but only a bit of the post has gone can anyone tell me how long it should take and how long it took them.

  • took me about 3/4 days..

try getting some pliers on what's left of the post

  • try to give it a tap with a hammer it might be enough.

  • Took me about 8 applications of caustic soda to dissolve mine, it is a slow method, but did the trick in the end. Once it was soft enough I used a hammer and screwdriver to tap it out, you can't rush these things, I tried heat, coke everything, and the Caustic was the one that worked.

  • its out, after about 11 days its finally out , what do i do now? do i have to do anything to nutrelise the tube

  • rinse with water, let dry properly. make sure you grease it b4 you put new seat post in!

  • well done for persevering tony

  • cheers

  • I've had a similar problem with my seatpost (1985 Pug frame and original seatpost) - tried WD40, clamping it and moving the bike (was very surprised when turning the entire bike resulted in twisting the seatpost out of the vice and zero movement out of frame!) hammering...

I'd never heard about the caustic soda treatment, well done on getting it working. I'm using my bike now on a weekly basis, so I might just leave it as it is for the moment.. =)

  • Caustic soda was a long process but it was worth it in the end, in the end it took me about 11 days but now its out. So if it’s your post is troubling you or you really want it out give caustic soda a go.
