I saw some on ebay and they are pretty cheap, and these would be effective as some sort of road bike brake?

Cool, ta.

tektro r556 (£32) if you can find them over here, or condor do one made by accor? (£10 each from condor) both give a max drop of 53-73mm though

alhonga do a super long reach dual pivot caliper. I use one and its pretty good, the long arms don't flex as much as you'd expect. have to pair them with decent pads, I use Avid Rim Wrangler 2's. you can sometimes find them unbranded on eBay for a fiver or less.

Hi guys,
I am in the process of converting one of my bikes back to a "classic / normal" racing bike, as I am now using my other frame as a fixed gear bike.
It is an old frame, which maybe had 27X1/4 wheels at the time (not sure)
So as a fixed, I only had a front brake, but now I need/want to add one at the back as well. At the front I have a standard (but nice) shimano double pivot brake with a 57mm drop, that fits OK, when the pads are sets at their lower position. But I was suprised to discover that at the back the shimano 57mm drop is too short!! I measured, and the distance from the axis of the brake bridge on the frame to the middle of the rim edge is 60mm.
57mm is apparently the best I can fine with shimano...
My problem is that the only alternative I found to the shimano brake is an
"ugly" Acor model...
http://www.simpsoncycles.co.uk/product.php?xProd=1350
I considered using that anyway as it is not that bad, and it is a dual pivot, but the threaded fixing axis is not threaded long enough to allow me to use a sunk bolt, and I am unsure that this could be removed and replace by a shorther one with more thread...Any idea of a product that could fit my extremely demanding specifications?
-60mm (approx) reach
-dual pivot
-"classy" finish (comparable to a shimano one)
-enough thread so I can cut the fixing axis short and use a sunk boltMany thanks!!

Well, this already looks better! Sorry for my long question, as I found quite easily a better alternative... Just need to check for the sunk bolt... Anyone have seen theses? would you recemmend it?
Thanks!

On this note - can i ask a question too.
My GF's Bike has rubbish brakes - and essentially no brakes in the wet.
If i get some new dual pivot calipers such as the SJS /Tektro ones above - keeping the old weinmann levers will we see an increase in braking performance? - her front rim is Mavic Open Sport - rear is an old steel jobbie....
Thanks - and sorry for hi-jacking!

Thanks for the offer - but.... she'll want silver. vello - you want it? -
fussy yeah!
do you know about if modern calipers are ok with old levers though??

na, 700c, just a very old touring frame for 27s + a mud guard (for sale if anyone wants that too!)
Any lever will work with these calipers... BMX work well.
Brake anyone? -

If the rear brakes don't have the original blocks (ie designed for contact with chrome rims) in them that might be half your problem right there.

Well, just like Jeanmi, I am quite fussy on the design for this one, just got that frame resprayed, and I want matching front and back bracke (as the shimano one I've got @ front is not available for the back, I will transfer it onto my fixed bike instead of the old mafac centre pull I use at the moment, and buy a pair for the racing bike)
Do you have both front a back, and a link maybe so I can see how it looks like?
Thanks for the offer anyway!

Is it something like this?
I don't mind the style in general, but I would prefer a dual pivot, and natural aluminium finish... Sorry to be so fussy!!

Sorry sLimJim, ignore my questions above, your pics would not display at first, same brake as the one on the link I posted...

Arghh!! No internet this WE at home, and too busy at work yesterday to come on the forum, I missed your answer and ordered the Tecktro!!
http://www.sjscycles.co.uk/product-Tektro-Tektro-R556-Dual-Pivot-Caliper-Brakes-55-73mm-Very-Deep-Drop-Allen-Key-Fitting--Front-and-Rear-17974.htm
Well, they are not too expensive (£28 for the set including postage) and I am under the impression that they are decent ones (what I know from this brand always has a good finishing...) They comply with what I want really, and will do the job for the moment I suppose... Good to know that Shimano do long reach to 65mm though! Thanks!Loic

Hi!
Got the brakes yesterday and fitted them on the bike. They are chunkier than the Shimano's and the finish is not as neat of course, but for the price they are more than decent, and I am happy with that for now... a little picture for you to judge:
Szia!

Have an old frame with 27" rims that needs a 70mm (ish) reach. The Tektro 556s look alright for the price, but was looking for something a bit more nice nice. Was also looking at i've found is Dia Comp's Weinman reissues which are centrepull, have since heard they are rubbish (is this the case?)
I've hear a rumour that Campag are doing reissue old style long reach callipers. Is this bullshit?? (Can't find on Google). Is it a case that options are limited for long reach so take what you can get?
Does anyone know where I can get a front and rear brake for a single speed with a reach required of approximately 70-80mm? The bike has a funny sized wheel (26").
