Plastic headset

  • Got one, fully plastic
    Is it worth anything ?
I know they were used due to their weight ( or lightness )

    any info appreciated

  • wow... got pics of this abomination?

(i don't know anything about plastic headsets, i just want to see one)

  • it's still on my new frame
doesn't look impressive, but maybe some collectors would want it
i'll post a picture later, right now i don't have a card reader

  • Is the whole thing plastic,
if not i think i might have one.

  • dunno, haven't looked inside yet

  • Not a threaded one I assume......

  • Is it black ?

It might be an M2 racer headset.

I had one (to qualify as a weight weenie you have to have one) - but they are a bit shit and my upper cup split - I threw it in a drawer and forgot about it, a few months later they recalled them (reports of them scoring the steerer tube) all and I sent mine in and got me some cash back action.

  • the frame i got it with is from the 60's and it's been lying in some attic for a few years with the headset on, so i'd doubt it's modern. half of it is grey.
are plastic headsets worth anything these days at all?

You would have to stick a picture up, but I doubt it is worth anything, even the M2 racer plastic headset which cost me a fortune (I can't remember but it might have been £100 or so) is pretty worthless now, no one wants them

Plastic headsets, an idea that came, failed and went, a decent alloy headset is massively more robust and smooth running and only 30-40g heavier.

  • sounds like a shimano 105 headset, plastic out part on the cups.

  • could be a stronglight B10?

  • Sorry for the hijack, but any thoughts on ceramic bearing headsets.

I'm looking at this one for a rigid single speed 29r. Its fair bit cheaper than a Chris King.

Are ceramic bearings a good idea for headsets?
Are Chris Kings worth the extra £ 20 - 30?

  • Why would you bother with ceramic bearings in a headset?
It's not like it's robbing you of speed due to the minute amount of extra friction you have with steel balls.

    Steel balls

I just wanted to say steel balls again.

  • Steel balls

    You're clackers...

  • TBH I dont know.

I am of course not interested in how fast I turn the bars.
Its just that I have noticed ceramic bearings being used alot in modern high-end headsets, and these are well priced.

If this ceramic use is purely to save weight, then its not for me.
If it makes for a stronger headset, then yes please.

One thought I have is that ceramic bearings are fooking hard, and aluminium races are not so hard. This seems like a bad combo.
I do have a ceramic bearing BB (yeah EBay) that I'm more than happy with , but that has ceramic treated races to compensate.

  • I remember the nylon headsets, they were used to save weight mainly in time trial bikes in the late 60's early 70's although lighter than steel they were crap to overhaul, the nylon thread used to chew up when unscrewing (bit like the plastic cups on the FAG b/brackets in the 90's) forgot the makers name but were only popular for a small time

  • "One thought I have is that ceramic bearings are fooking hard, and aluminium races are not so hard. This seems like a bad combo." tynan mentioned this the other day.. i'm not sure about all this force/hardness/light toss so best ask him. I also tend to kill headsets quicker than tyres for various reasons so I 'personally' wouldn't buy any super expensive ones. :)
