  • Are there any weight weenies on here that have realised that if you take a drill to the inner wall of a road rim it'll help a lot but will keep most of it's strength? (hopefully anyway) I dunno if you guys know about drilled rims, but it makes 100 gram difference with 20mm holes on a 20" trials rim, or there abouts, so think about 50 odd 10mm holes on a 700c, will probably make a decent difference to an already light rim.

When i sort my drill out (haven't bothered charging it for ages) i'm gonna get to work on the spinergys on my gearie.

  • Good thinking, if you can drill very typically very strong over built 20" trials rim - then why not already light 700c rims.

If only the various rim manufacturers - who spend small fortunes researching how to reduce their rims/wheelsets by a few grams - knew about this !

  • I dont know if youve noticed, but there is already holes on the inside of a rim, where you put the spokes. They are fairly large, larger than they have to be probably because the manufacturers alreay gave that weight saving opportunity a tought.

Where else would you fit more holes?

Surely this logic only applies to spinergy's and the like, which ive heard are very brittle.

  • I'll say it before anyone else will
don't do it fat pants, not recomended !
20" fat wheels are drastically different to 28" thin wheels.

  • but fat pants is a very special person, and he WILL find out the hard way!

  • Why not take your drill to everything else too, stem, seat post, shifters, brake levers. I'm sure nobody has ever been smart enough to try this before, Fat Pants you are a genious.

  • Ending up flat on the floor when his rim collapses

  • Didn't people use to drill pretty much everything a while back ? I wonder why we don't see it so much these days.....

  • You would like your rim drilled?

  • if your really worried about the milligrams chopping off every other finger can save quite a bit of weight
also i have heard drilling holes in your head with a black and decker is also advised when lookng for those last few ounces

  • Off you go... back to biketrials.co.uk.. don't let the door hit your arse on the way out..

    ;)

  • No way could you get away with 10mm holes!! Perhaps 3-5mm ones.
But seriously, tynan got it spot on - manufacturers are competing on exactly these statistics.
Google 'drillium' for examples of this fad in the 1970-80s for drilling every bikepart to reduce weight. Woljersey has some absolutely crazy pics.

    That looks awesome!

  • The left picture is either a lightweight hearing-aid or a sea horse. Hard to tell.

  • yeah they used to drill and mill everything but found the bikes flexed so much that what thay saved in waight was lost in the flex?

  • There some greats photos of drilled seat post failuire somewhere...

  • Drilling? Forget drilling - go NoRims (TM) FTW.

  • the reason you dont see it anymore is because way to many components failed big time.
why not remove some 'fat' from urself before destroying ur wheels fat pants?

ps. in most cases weightweenies are complete twats and should not be listened to.

  • Brian Lopes mechanic drilled the inner walls of his sun MTX rims, IIRC.

    for 4x racing

After all, the heaviest thing on your bike is you.

Why not try drilling some holes in your bones?

    Or just have a poo...?

  • Or just have a poo...?

Always works for me - spliff, coffee, unleash hell, loose about half a stone

  • I'm regular at 7:30 every morning.

trouble is, I don't get up until 8

  • Plastic sheets ftw!

  • Alf Engers had the shit drilled out of his bars and chain rings. Not sure drilling rims would be the best idea in the world.
