  • "dead hard" heh heh

  • Mooks when your cut you stem were you able to recover the forks, and just get a new stem. . and other bits? or. . .was it a bad thing cutting the stem?
    x

You can, but it's a real faff. I cut down as close as I could to the fork steerer, and then drilled out what was left of the stem. Luckily I had a friend with access to an industrial drill though - you'll need a big drillbit!

  • I would seriously advise against cutting the stem untill its a last resort, it wont take that long to dort it out properly and you'll be left with a stem and forks that both work.

be a little patient and it will come out, first thing to answer is can you get the expander bolt out?

if you can then you should be able to do the next bit by the end of tonight if youve got tiny bars in the stem then switch them to something longer to give you more leverage

  • danng
ill be back to wacking that thing soon then !

  • seriously. WD40 is your friend.

  • thanks to everyone for the wonderful spelling in this thread, it's been truly exceptional.

the funniest thing i have read / heard / seen all day.
    two gold stars.

  • you mean 'rep'

    sniff

  • no no no.
    i mean gold stars.
    they are far superior.

  • they make your screen a bit sticky tho.

  • oil upside down for 24hr as mentioned above

hit stem blot with a lump hammer don't bother with one of these toy hammers I've seen some people using you need a good 2-3lb hammer at least.

bike on side wit front wheel removed

4x2 up in the **top **of the fork crown, make sure the wood it right at the top so you do not bend the fork legs

friend stood on one end of 4x2

    you twist the bars

once they have moved once you can start to waggle the bar back and forth and the stem will pull out.

Basically it requires some bruit force. I've have never been beaten with this method even on some bike that have been left outside for years.

  • Sledge FTW!

(And a good thick bit of wood)

  • Do you mean

    or

  • I agree with Dammit.

  • even on some bike that *have been left outside for years.

    *has

  • Thanks for the input. I meant "bikes" not "some bike".

  • Nice bit of suspense built up here. Wonder how it's all going to end.

  • rongly

  • wongly

  • in tiers

  • He he.

  • Stem removal = piece of cake.

  • ive worked on a quill stem bike with the stem **fully **seized, tried all of the above in the shop but in the end the only thing for it was to cut the stem and throw the forks. Sounds like a waste but it does happen. Ammonia is really good for getting rid of alu. oxide but it fuckin stinks!

  • I do hate myself for resorting to such brutal tactics.
