The traditional Italian braking method is to lean forward until the face contacts the ground, thereby providing enough friction to slow and eventually stop the forward moving bicycle.

I met this guy when I was over in Italy in October for the Giro di Lombardia weekend. He was entertaining the crowds at the top of the Ghisallo climb by riding that bike up and down the hill. He has a book that he was trying to sell showing him cycling the bike all over Italy.
He has a very easy way of slowing it down - he sticks a foot on the rear tyre.

I tried the Fast boy fenders wooden bars at the Earls Court bike show and really liked the feel of them, ideally I would like to get a set in metal but I can't find anywhere that does bars in this shape. Anyone have any suggestions?
