  • Why are there so few 'Fixed Wheel' bikes that are built with carbon fibre frames, compared to standard road bikes?

Is it down to fashion (trends) or performance not as vital as on a geared road bike?

  • Check thin thread:
    http://www.londonfgss.com/thread123.html
and look harder there are lots.

  • So its just down to bikes being stolen.....

I can understand that being a big enough deterrent to not use carbon fibre frames, as there are many geared road bikes around that have carbon fibre frames. I'm more interested in performance wise?

  • For a lot fixed riders performance (as you mean it) is only an element for consideration when choosing their bike.

Those that ride looking for 100% performance usually only ride fixed if it's in a velodrome, or their training for a velodrome.

  • Crash a steel track frame, crash a carbon one.. which one is more likely to be going again next week?
Lock up a steel fixed in London, lock up a carbon one.. which is more likely to be there when you get back to it?

  • carbon frames are also more fragile ? crack break easier than a more giving steel frame ?

  • Usually, most of us build our bike within budget, a carbon fibre frame would've cost a could grand easily, which is a bit pointless when you can easily build a reasonably lightweight fixed wheel bicycles for £400-500 easily.

  • Another thing I've thought about; road bike tend to have quite a lots of components, and that tend to weight it down a bit, hence the carbon fibre road frame?

  • Spesh' will probably make a slack geometry LangsterCarbonEdition. GQ and Men'sHealth would run features... But it'll only be fallen off by a few Bankers and Estate Agents ;-)

  • compound?

  • components

  • So durability for road use is the key. Sounds like a lot of people reguarly fall off their fixed bikes, something I may need to get used to!

Funny, since most Langster riders I know are 20-somethings working in media.

    Stereotype Fail.

  • Those cheapass Koga frames make great commuters.. tis true

  • Seems that most carbon fiber frames now days have vertical dropouts making fixed a bit of a hassle. Unless your willing to get keen and (carbon) fork out for a modern carbon track fame.

I know they are in need of capitalisation these days but not like that...

  • ^^^ although as Hippy points out, there are some cheap shopper candidates out there.

    bANKERS and eSTATE aGENTS.

    Happy now?

  • Hilarious.

  • like the Condor Pista, actually weight is usually moot as long it ride nicely.

  • ^that got you where it hurts^

    :)

    Moots point.

  • IMHO carbon just doesn't look and feel as nice as a good steel frame. Might be useful if you wanna shave off miliseconds off your commute but most people on here like the feel of steel and aren't bothered with having the latest in unobtainium drivetrains.
