  • Pajames - just do this for rough idea. (northern hemisphere only)
    Point hour hand at sun, bisect the angle between hour hand and 12:00, that is your north-south line.

    All good stuff, but this is London we're talking about. I can't remember the last time I saw it here - even in the height of summer it was hidden behind clouds of pollution!

  • Plus a lot of people only have digital watches, not much use then.

  • When my plane crashes and I am beaten, raped then dumped in a wooded area by the natives I won't care about which way north is, I will simply call Addison Lee as per usual.

  • You probably wouldn't have a watch OR a phone.
