    I quite like his hair.

  • Whilst i fully support individuality and a persons right to grow dreadlocks and their desire to be judged upon them, I once put this in my blog......

"Hairstyles shouldnt be determined by the colour of your skin, dreads are all too often a style too far for most white peoples hair especially when you have to spend hundreds of pounds trying to get them. To start with, it doesnt matter how much you might enjoy smoking dope and wearing vaguely ethnic clothes and wooden beads - being a scruffy, upper middle class, pseudo hippy from Kent should automatically stop you from trying to adopt the distinctive hairstyle of a Jamaican religious group (where locks aren't just a fashion style, they're a spiritual and religious show of faith to Emperor Haile Selaisse and Jah) even if common sense doesnt. Why style your hair in the manner of what is a largely impoverished third world people then spend your days drinking £5 Chai tea lattes and eating a roasted vegetable foccacia whilst mourning the impending date of expiration of your dreads i.e. when you finish your performance art/world science/dog brushing/cake icing degree and have to go home and live with mummy and daddy again before getting a job at daddys company?

I would also like to point out that you seem to have no knowledge of whatever secret techniques Rastafarians use to keep their locks (and only locks because theres nothing dreadful about them) in that fantastically clean and presentable state their hair looks like long slinky tendrils of locked goodness whereas white persons dreads always look like theyre being held together with spit, lard and glue. There is nearly always a fantastic amount of dandruff trapped in the hair nearest to your greasy scalp too.

Dont even bother to try and justify your dreads on spiritual grounds its a hairstyle that took you a day to get and It must be insulting to people who have taken months and really worked on their locks. After 5 years, most of you with dreads will cut them off and become normal, boring haired, suited white people, while the rest will continue to attempt to link hippie culture with Rastafarian culture, and possibly embarrass true Rastafarians in the process. What kind of message are you sending to the world? You're a peace-loving hippie, yet just like every other privileged white person in the world you feel it is your "Right" to take what you can from other cultures, leaving an empty husk in the wake. surely the fact that you continue to have dreads only shows your condescension."

It was a long time ago and I'm much calmer now.

I fully support your sentiments here, may I add though, that Rastafarianism has been around for 100 odd years or so and that having dreads does not always have to equate to being a wannabe rasta and I think it would be silly of any rasta to take offense at someone else's hairstyle (especially a true rastafarian) People off all cultures have had dreaded hair over the last 30,000 years of human history for all manner of reasons.
