harder tyres = less grip.
Not exactly.
Pressure too high: reduced contact patch = less grip
Pressure just right: hippy has pancakes, love is in the air, world peace
Pressure too low: tyre deforms too much, cornering becomes sketchy as tyre wobbles around = less grip -

harder tyres = less grip.
If that were the case then wouldn't we all be running tyres at 0 PSI?
Optimally pressured tyres give good grip. Too hard and they have too small a contact patch and offer less grip, too low and the tyre deforms and grip is poor. The recommend inflation range on most tyres is there for a reason folks.

@snails - do you go to that awesome bike shop on the south side of Scottsdale? Can't remember the name but it's a little out of town and has a whole separate building devoted to sweet cruisers from Felt, Electra, etc - I could have bought the entire stock, if I could have fitted it in my hold baggage!
bicycle haus?
They are more of the hipster house. but they do carry some cool stuff. in Tempe where I live there is "dominics" they are fantastic. Really nice guys, always willing to help out and they carry a lot of everything I ever need.
so weird there are people that have been to az on here ha. I don't know why anyone would come here!

Sedona?
is just a lot of red mountains mainly.
to see anything worth seeing tree wise gotta go all the way up to like flagstaff and around there.
I just went to the grand canyon for the first time and that was rather impressive. Can't live in AZ for 7 years and never go to the earth's vagina.

i am wondering whether the tarmac they use is tested for cyclists safety or whether they just consider cars / four wheeled vehicles etc.
anybody know about surface treatments of roads / safety for cyclists ?

I ride a trials bike too, and I have my rear tyre at around 14psi and front around 18psi. They're really, really grippy! but it's a completely different ball game with road tyres. You want the tyre to be hard enough not to squirm, but not so hard you lose the amount of rubber in contact with the road (alreay ben said, I think).

Thanks for thirding it though! :P
Trials is a completely different beast to road riding - the tyre choice and pressures comparison is kinda pointless.

Yep. Slammed today onto my hip, shoulder and ankle!? Deathly slippery. Tried turning up a one way st (The wrong way) to be faced by oncoming traffic and hit the ground hard! All a bit fun though, I hadn't fallen off anything in a while, it's a nice reminder that it's not really that bad!

Depends how bad you fall and whether you're expecting it or not. I most certainly was not expecting it and fell pretty hard. I hurt and my chin's got a big gash in it. So it's knockec my confidence in the wet now. This week seems to be especially moist meaning that it's incredibly slippy on the roads.
I don't think our tyre choice or psi is the problem, I blame it on the road surfaces. Get London to sort all of their roads out and we'll be sorted :-D -

The temperature in Flagstaff is just bearable being high up in the attitude, quite a small hick town thought.

hmmmm.. well, after my spill last night I fitted my new 700x25 maxxi re-fuses and I am going to be riding them out tomorrow. Hope it hasn't got even worse, is that light rain i hear? Anyway I'm hoping for great things - I was riding rubino on the front , gatorskin on the back last night - not really surprised they lived up to their reps..
So what would be the optimum psi in these conditions? Let's say the tyre has max inflation guideline on the wall of 120psi... would be good to get a knowledgeable answer on this.

my rear wheel slid out when going over a level crossing and for the next few miles seemed to be sliding off to the right. Realised later I'd put the spacers in the wrong places when fitting the rear wheel and it wasn't centred in the frame.
+1 for conti 4 seasons, no punctures + grip FTW, although they feel heavy and resistant after riding vittoria rubinos in the summer.

if the tyres are 25c or below i personally woulden't go out on them with less than max infaltion (100-120psi)
Any less pressure (less than 100psi), if you hit a stone or a sharp edge or whatever, you'll get those dreaded pinch flats, as i found out to my cost many moons ago. maybe a fuckered rim too. Also found out to my cost.
They are simply too low profile to have any play with unless you know the roads are going to dead smooth and bumpless. -

Just so you know people.. you need to slow down a bit when it's slippery.. ya bunch of thickos! ;-)

I hit a rock and fucked my rim but didn't pinch flat and that was at 40kph with only 60psi or some shit in the tyre. 90psi is fine. 100psi is fine. 110psi is probably ok if you have your wits about you and aren't hammering with no respect for your old friend "grip".
I weigh 90-95kg and inflate tyres to 7.5bar (105-110psi ish) and then let them go over time until I remember to pump them up. Front as low as 80psi (lower last time) and rear 90psi I guess. -

I don't actually know.. usually a stone more than I'd like...I suppose between 90 - 95kg too.
i wasn't going fast when i bought it the other night..you bet your ass i'm not hammering it around today either, oily as fuck out there.
I figure I'll let out some of the air on the tyres from your advice Hippy - I'm on 115psi at the moment, just 10 psi less sounds like it would be a lot more beneficial in these shitty conditions.

Gators front and back - no problems!
I locked up and broadsided from the archway road entrance to the holloway road exit on the archway roundabout this morning. the tarmac and this greasy film meant there was noway i was stopping.Effortless skids FTW
And this is good why exactly?

Just burnt thru my rear tyre coz of too much skidding! Think it's got a few miles left tho.
still fucking slipperly, end up lowering the tyres psi to an average 90.
