Staying behind and to the right is fine, if they suddenly pull in, you just swerve to the right and go past and be on your way, at a slightly higher speed than normal =P

The Oxford road in Manchester is a fucking assault course of poorly driven buses and taxis. Slipstreaming one of those huge, ungodly fuckers is a deathwish.

I hope by "swerve to the right" you mean "leaving sufficient distance to complete a headcheck for trailing vehicles and move over" because otherwise you're gonna get killed by a car overtaking the bus when you swerve out.

You're right at the corner of the bus, it starts to pull in, say theres about a meter between the bus and the white line in the middle off the road, no car is gonna shoot past you fully into the opposing lane and cut you up, it's just like going through a gap on a road with no bus lane and a bus pulls in, a bike can fit, a car can't, I guess swerve was a little too much of a word, more of a jink =P

"no car is going to" fail. Someone will.
Headcheck.
Also, you're assuming the bus actually pulls "in". Some don't move over at all, indicate and wait out a bit for another bus in front to pull away, so that gap you're counting on never appears.
Anyway, I know what you mean, I do it all the time.. I basically wanted to point this out since I watch shitloads of muppets snap around the back of buses, etc without giving a thought to what's coming up behind them.. me in these cases. -

a car may not be over taking you but another cyclist or a motor bike might be.
One of my pet hates is people pulling out round other cars, buses e.t.c or moving from the inside of the lane to the outside without looking back down the line of traffic to see if anyone else is already there and traveling along. I know to expect it but it's just the same as a pedestrian popping out into the road without looking, stupid.

You want deathwish, try slipstreaming one on that road in the pissing rain with spray so bad you can barely see the brake lights...! Had some good speed going though.

Yep, happened to me, moped pulls out behind a car without looking while i'm going through a gap in traffic jam.
but it stinks behind buses... not feeling those exhaust fumes... i avoid the back of buses at all costs...
