Just thought I'd round this thread up with what I did, so future people searching and reading will know what to do/ how it pans out:
Firstly, thanks for everyone's advice.
I tried to buy a pipe cutter, but small adjustable ones don't go wide enough (normally limited to 16/18mm) - and bigger ones, adjustable or not cost about 15-17GN. That seemed too much as the bar only cost that and I would only need it for this one job... SO I went for the hacksaw option.
Top tip:
slowly cut around the line until you've got a shallow groove all the way around.
The saw blade **should **now follow the groove but at least if it doesn't you can see as soon as it starts to deviate.
thanks Jones. Didn't go all the way round, but did a half groove down the near side. this kept the blade riding down exactly where I wanted it to be, so the cut is pretty darn straight.
It's really easy cutting the aluminum down. I thought it would be tough (not done much metal work you see...) Took thirty seconds each end. Blap, done. Then did a very quick file of the edges to make sure I/ my grips wouldn't get any cuts and that was it. Aces. So don't be afraid, it's easy and rewarding.
