When it comes to ride quality, which should always be more important than looks....a lot of modern frames ride far better than most vintage ones.
Depends on how much you ride it I guess. If you want a show pony that you only ride on special occasions and vintage is your thing then it seems like a no-brainer.
I agree with you though that modern bikes are 9 times out of 10 better to ride (on a basic like for like basis) but then my bikes are for riding not looking at. I currently ride older bikes (an early 90s Raleigh and a late 90s Pug) because I think buying new is a false economy (or rather its too expensive for me when there are a wealth of decent 2nd hand bikes out there) and also I got these two bikes for free off my dad.

I still think older bikes look better though.
