I think your trouble all stems from the fact you forgot to factor in the extra £100 London Fixed-Gear scene tax :)
I build lots of bikes no make that lots and lots of bikes :D everyone I know has bought a bike off me at some point :) I've even got my parents riding single speed :D
If I see a bargain I buy it, but I'm only allowed a certain number of bikes before Mrs Jones starts threatening me :D so I sell them as soon as their finished and if I get my money back I 'm happy.
I think Kingcutter is right, your so used to London prices you forget their are genuine bargains out there from people who just enjoy messing about with bikes in their spare time.
Its a bit sad I know but my idea of a good night is some decent music a pile of parts and a bare frame in a bike stand, if I then choose to sell it for the very bare sum of its parts it doesn't make me a thief :)
