Archi, you using 48:16 on a fixed or a singlespeed? Am thinking about this ratio for my single, would you endorse?
Both, it's a Flip/Flop hub. But these days it's more SS than Fixed, my old mans knees can't take it.
It's an ok ratio for around town. Not to bad acceleration from standing start and quite good top speed. I used to have this ratio on my commuter, but changed to 44:16 to get much better acceleration, as there's lots of stop/starts on my route and top speed was less important.
I now have the 48:16 set up on my Pub Bike, and still like it for weekend riding about town.
So, yep I would endorse. It's not tough and not spinny (78.9GI), in my opinion (not that it's worth much) I would definitely give it a go.

Tell you what not to ride 39x18 with 175mm cranks - 59.6" in Cambridge. You look like the road runner and get nowhere fast.
Bring on the postman with my new cogs!

Was running 52 - 21/19 on my single speed, but now converted to a fixed and running 42 - 16. I like it. It feels just right to get me about and up a few hills when I have to.

Ha no riding home after a TT in the pissin rain down Cudham Lane and hit a patch of diesel, skidding all over the place and decided a gravel driveway was a better bail out than a head on with the car coming up the hill.
It was a luverlee judo style breakfall but the my arse was the brake for 20 feet :) sore ride home and three days off the bike.
OUCH!!! Hope you heal up quick, that looks very painful

46/17 165mm
46/17 all the way!
44/16 is pretty similar as well. -

42/16 but its gotta change, pure acceleration but crap top speed. thinking 47/17... does that make sense, or is it a bit much considering winter conditions on the way? (just looked out the window and its snowing!?)

48/16 works a treat for my commute from Wandsworth to City - but then there are no significant hills. Did go 44/16 for a while - too spinny by far!!

47 :17 is a good gear, when paired on the other side with 47 :18
i like to swap them back and forth depending on the ride or how my legs feel.

I have to ride stright through the centre of London so I get stopped by about 10 sets of traffic lights at major junctions and have a good few hills on the way home. I would like a higher top speed, but I'd be knackered pulling from the line so often in any higher a gear. Plus it's my trick bike at the same time as my commuter.
What gear ratio do people run for trick bikes?

I dont know why not ask in this thread?:

That would make sense wouldn't it! I didn't know whether this thread might be the place to do it seeing as it's specifically for gear ratios, but I didn't think about what the ratios were for: whether they were for commuting, track riding, touring, etc.
