1) Suggest that you take advantage of Richmond Park, get into it, then skirt the Northern part. Come out along Priory lane, then do a quick right-left to get onto the road which takes you straight up to Hammersmith Bridge. (passing Barnes Station) You will be able to overtake a lot of cars here!
2) High Street Ken can be a bit of a headache for pedestrians / buses and the rest.. but also fun. -

my route would be:
http://www.gmap-pedometer.com/?r=2386707ignore the last bit, just find the best route around that area.
you lucky bastard- 10m commute through richmond park- which means on a sunny summer day you can nail it around there a couple of times.
also fulham road isnt too bad earlier than eight. noone bothers to get up around there till then
final edit: knightsbridge is a knightmare. avoid. It was there I saw my first bike on car accident.

Seems like a good route to me. Only dodgy bit is Hammersmith roundabout/flyover, always super busy but keep your wits about ya and you'll be fine.

Mine was similar to the above two:

If I were you I'd go via Fulham/Chelsea rather than Hammersmith/Kensington purely because of traffic..
If you were to go Putney Bridge>Fulham>Chelsea Embankment>Millbank you'd probably hit less (slow moving) traffic and you'd skirt the river and get to pass by Battersea Power station, Parliament etc etc..
I had a really good run down Chelsea embankment yesterday, it's quite wide and fast moving so you can get some good speed going..

Agree with avoiding Ken high St. but after that you have a nice ride alongside the park.

Thanks chaps... Will definitely hack through the top of Richmond park and probably avoid Hammersmith.
Like that route, eyebrows... Might do a dry run next week sometime.

You've got so many more options than me... and I wing it.
Learn three or four routes well, and then vary them according to mood, weather conditions, traffic, speed, etc.
I head in from Kew Bridge and flip between heading towards Shepherds Bush & the North of Hyde Park or heading to High St Kensington and the South of Hyde Park.
Now your route has several permutations, and so what I'd do is try them all, and then once you've learned them choose when you leave the house, or when you have to take a turning. And just wing it according to how you feel. You'll find that most of the time you use one route, and occasionally will go a more fun or difficult one.
And Richmond Park first thing... you'll hate that hill, and the park will give you no protection from the weather... but in the summer that will be heavenly.

my suggestion:
over Hammersmith Bridge (as detailed on this route via Barnes)
1>[ame]http://www.bikely.com/maps/bike-path/West-London-BBCish-to-Richmond-Park[/ame
[/ame]
2>Through Shepherd's Bush (Iffley Road> Lena Gardens >Blythe Road > Addison Gardens through Notting Hill (ladbroke road>bayswater>moscow road> HYDE PARK (bayswater gate)>out through the park at PARK LANE/Brook Street gate>Grosvenor Square>Bond Street>Burlington Row>Across Regent Street...
I would show you how to do this on bikely, but i don't remember the interslice knowledge to create new routes.
*Advantages *of the above route: mainly quiet except Hamm Bridge and a small bit near Holland Park avenue.
Disadvantages: might not be the shortest distance/Ken gardens closes at dusk -

I go from putney to westminster, and find heading up King's road, then embankment is pretty sweet

I'm with the Richmond Pk route to begin with, that's a must ( I do it every other day cycling Epsom to Ealing) and then go with the Fulham crowd, nipping through Barnes Common then over Putney bridge gives better route in and avoids UUuugghammersmith.

Wandsworth to Westminster, and we have similar alter egos. Spooky.

I used to ride this often. Id ride through the park, onto Putney, over Putney bridge, take a right after the bridge and ride through Chelsea harbor, cutting out Fulham and Hammersmith. From Chelsea harbout stick close to the river and come out at Embankment then straight down there to Westminster and Trafalger Square

Sounds pretty similar to the route I suggested.. +1

Since I'm not yet allowed to start a thread, and can't find anything that I really want to contribute to any existing threads right now, I thought I'd ask my own routing question here...
I'm going from Dalston to Latimer Road, does anyone have any suggestions? I presume that there are several major roads that need avoiding. Route by car is Balls Pond > Essex Road > Angel > Euston Road > Marylebone > Westway, but the last 2 sections are out of the question for cyclists, I suppose. Looking at the map, I can't seem to find a decent way to cut that bit out. Help a newb!

Take the nice back streets to Putney Bridge, via where Mark Bolan was killed in his mini. Cross the bridge and at the bottom take a right before Kings Road. Go towards the Hurlingham Club where you will need to take a left and go round it as the riff-raf are not allowed through the Park there. This brings you out at the bottom of Wandswarth Bridge, head straight onto Chelsea Harbour where all the rich chavs live. This eventually takes you to Lotts Road where you turn right. . eventually you will conme out on Chelsea Embankment. Carry on along the embankment and then you have a choice of whether to go via westminster or down the Vicrtoria Embankemt, round the strand and to your destination. Havent made a map but you get the idea. This is the low traffic route ( up to the embankment anyhow)

this should help you avoid the main roads and once at Paddington head down Praed st>Leinster Gardens>Westbourne Grove (there is a back route via Hereford road). This will get you most of the way there, and I'm sure you can have fun with the roads nearbyIn both cases get the TFL cycle route maps available at most cycle shops and by post from tfl.gov.uk . They will show you some nice alternative routes)

if you want a fast route then you are not far off. Certainly Euston -> Marylebone is fine for cycling and is quick. From there, don't take the flyover of the Westway but bear left down to the roundabout by paddington. Second exit onto the A404 and through the scary looking but quick underpass. Then Harrow road up to the junction with Ladbroke Grove, turn onto Cambridge Gardens and then to Latinmer Rd.
If you want a slow, irritating but traffic free route then the canal is worth a pop. It'd drive me insane though.
Playing with traffic FTW.
Ello.
Looks like i'll be moving to Richmond in the not too distant future...
Can any of you fine people recommend a good commuting route? Will happily trade extra distance for nice scenery.
I was thinking somethink like this but don't know West very well. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.
