Use fingers, make sure it gets all over the threads. Don't do them up with a spanner or allen key, finger tight is fine, your pedalling movement will do the rest. I struggle to release every set of pedals I ever install, regardless of how loosely I think I've initially done them up.

Being a bit of a vandal, and being lazy, i drill a 1mm hole in the outer end cap and pump a couple of squirts of finish line grease in every month.
The new grease pushes the old grease out through the inboard seals.
I have a couple of sets of M540 spds that are getting on for a decade old and i have never had to take them apart in order to service them.
So it works a treat for me.Toodle pip

Just chuck loads of grease on them and make sure its evenly spread. I'd tighten them with a spanner. I know the rotating action is supposed to keep them on but i've had a couple fall off before. Which isn't good.
