  • Ive got a new wheel at last, but I need the bolt out of the middle of the old hub to go in it, so i can stick it on my bike.

What tool is it I need? im clueless about wheels

the old Hub is a Formula stock hub from a fuji track 2007

the new hub is a Sora.

  • Got a picture ?
    Allen key?
    Torx key?
    12 point multi spline?

  • My phone camera sux, sorry.

    New

    old

  • You want to swap the axles?

Cone spanners, ten minute job. If you don't know what you're doing though, take it to your local bike shop. You don't want to make a mess of your spacing and your bearings.

  • eye.. I want to switch it on my axles.

I never know what im doing, and its never stopped me before.

    cone spanner it is!

  • I have cone spanners if you want, they are not as blurred as those nuts though ;)

  • Thanks for the offer fixed.

Sadly im working in victoria today. Ill see if the local evans can sort me out - im not hopeful tho.

  • got a couple of cone spanners

    13,14,15,16,17,18

not sure what size both axel bolts are.

I'm a little worried the bolt from the old Formula hub won't fit in the new sora hub.
am i going to be able to slot it in there?

  • can't you just use a quick release skewer or do you want bolts for a particular reason?
read this link on hub servicing... http://www.parktool.com/repair/readhowto.asp?id=105

EDIT - the long thing is called an axle, is that what you want to swap?

  • yup the axel

I don't have have a quick release skewer, id rather use a bolt so it can't get nicked as easy.

The cones on the shimano hub should be 15mm and the lock nuts 17mm. I think the same goes for the formula hub.
The solid axle will fit in the sora hub, but you need will want to use the cones, spacers and lock nuts from the sora hub on the formula axle.

  • Decathlon have some cheap security replacement type skewers for ten quid. Easier and in many respects better.

  • ok - the park tools thing should see you sorted.. but if you don't lock your front wheel anyway you are silly.
ignore the part where is says for quick release you need to adjust it so that the bearings are a tiny bit loose (the QR is meant to compress the whole shebang)

  • bearings are a tiny bit loose (the QR is meant to compress the whole shebang)

I've tried that but never found that it works and really why should it, the fork ends are still pressing up against the lock nuts same as on a bolt through axle. As always YMMV but I just find adjusting it correctly from the start works best.

  • I did need to do that fiddlyness when I used a QR, but it really depends on the hub I think...
QRs squeeze the entire axle, whereas nuts only squeeze against locknuts.

Ah true. As you say I think it is hub dependent as the leave it loose job never seems to work for me on any of my q/r hubs.

My shaft is clearly just more rigid that yours.;)

  • it is therefore more likely to snap.
Are you free any weekends for some SS MTbing? thinking mid-december?

  • Im still worried, the new sora hub has complete different plugs things on the end (i guess I will be removing these completely) and the actual hole for the axel is very small (I guess its designed for a quick release)

once i remove the plugs (cones?) im hoping theres going to be a nice hole with a ring of barings around to fit my old bolt axel through and I just put the plug ends from the old hub on the new and it all fits nice and snug.

  • Just buy a Allen key or similar replacement skewer.

  • please use correct terminology - I have no clue what you are on about!

EDIT - and tommy is right. you can get allen key skewers. and you should be locking your front wheel in london anyway.

    That's hillbilly's shop... Mention you're on here...

  • Okay now im really stuck.

Ive taken the dust capsoff.. but I can't see how to get the axel out.
Its all smooth nothing to put a spanner too. I can only get one side of the dustcovers off, the other one seems wielded shut.

  • Theyre cartridge bearing, the axles arent interchangeable. However, to remove the axle from that hub, gently twat the end of it.
You can buy a track axle from a bike shop to replace the QR axle on the sora for around £10.

  • why didn't someone tell me this 3 days ago before i went and bought all these spanners. bollox.

  • Ahh.. sorry mate. An assumption was made early on and it followed through.
I posted that link and the big picture and everything. dammit!
