jimmy_piercy, unlike other sportspeople who join sports from priviledged backgrounds (golf, tennis and motorsport normally require a rich daddy or mummy), Lewis Hamilton became a millionaire through his father's belief in his son's ability, and his father sometimes holding down up to three jobs to make sure his son could race.

The Hamilton's aren't landed gentry; Hamilton (senior) is originally from the tiny island of Grenada. Not many rich people there, but lots of nutmegs, fruit and beaches. They were poor, but aren't now. Its called success via hard work.

Unlike Tim Henman (nice bloke that he is); the Hamilton's didn't have family money for expensive coaching.
