Unscrewing sprocket - help!

Posted on
  • Hello,

I'm trying to remove the sprocket from my hub. The damn thing is fully tight and literally won't budge. I had a go at it at the weekend with my weedy chain whip and WD40 and the like with no joy. So, I've just been down the LBS and they had a go at it with their axle vice and a chunky and long Park chain whip. Snapped the chain and still didn't move!

I ride a fair bit but I'm not that strong :-)

Help! Any tips? This absolutely has to come off because I broke a spoke and can't rethread the hub with the sprocket in place. I guess clamping the sprocket in a vice is possibly a solution. If that fails, cutting the sproket down to the thread (carefull!) would also work. I don't care about writing the sprocket off, I just want my wheel!

The hub is an Ambrosio fixed/fixed with a LH thread lockring (and yes, the lockring is off!).

    Any other suggestions gratefully received.

    Cheers!

  • put the back tyre up against a wall and stamp back on the pedals

  • try soaking it in pusgass overnight, then clamping it in a vice and rotating the wheel, if that does not work try using a hammer and chisel against the teeth of the sprocket to loosen it up

  • you could try puting the wheel back in the frame without the lock ring and stand on the pedel forcing the cranks backwards

  • reverse rotafix will yeil more leverage than the chainwip. Their chain probably snapped because it can be hard to keep the chain straight when using one under alot of pressure.

Good luck. May God be with you.

  • Hammer and punch has already been tried!!!

Yes, back in the frame sounds like a plan. It did cross my mind but I hadn't thought about using a wall to stop the wheel moving. A good tip, thanks!

  • sounds like youve tried the obvious things...

    right before the chop...
id give it one last go with a chain whip one that hasnt seen 50+ bikes and get another arm on there/scaff pole... youd be surprised how much strength you can add if you're not holding the fucker.

what ive done in the past with a big seized sprocket is pop it back in the frame with tyre etc still on it for extra friction and put the tyre against the wall so theres 2 points of contact (wall and floor) on the tyre... and give it some welly.

    basically what they said!

    shut it!

  • Another good tip, thanks!

    Here's a nice rotafix description:

  • Also recommend the reverse rotafix, worked for me.

  • overnight soaking with wd40 followed by reverse rotafix worked for me too. it was going nowhere the night before.

  • Drill a small hole through the cog to feed the new spoke through, leave the cog put.

  • i rest the chainwhip against a door frame or immovable object and use the leverage of the wheel. ;)
