Fixed wheel child carrier?

Posted on
  • Has anyone got any experience of using a fixed wheel for child carrying duties?

I've picked up a Surly Crosscheck frame for this purpose and intend to use it with a childseat on a rear rack (as opposed to a trailer down at exhaust level). I'm now trying to weigh up whether to build it up as a fixed wheel or whether to get some gears - probably a single chain ring maybe 42T and a 12 - 28 cassette.

Any useful thoughts or pearls of wisdom appreciated.

  • I rode the first 40 miles of a 90 mile ride on my old pace singlespeed with one of my children happily sitting in his Hamax child seat.
Personally i think a freewheel is safer with a kiddie on board because the weight affects the handling more, especially at slow speeds....so you could find your legs in the wrong place as you're trying to counteract your kid hanging out one side of the seat looking down at the road wizzing past...:)

  • Oh...and i'd recommend the Hamax style suspended seats over rack mount ones as it gives the child a bit more comfort as they dont keep getting a kick up the arse every time the rear wheel hits something.

  • BMMF was riding his last night, sans-kiddie.. On-One Inbred

  • Scott - Good point re ss over fw. What happened for the last 50 miles... tears? - yours/theirs?

Hippy - thanks I'll pick his brains too.

  • I have a seat that clamps onto the head tube, it is fantastic as I can interact with my daughter whist I ride more easily.

He started to get too cold...it was like that scene from dumb and dumber where they have the frozen snot trails down the sides of their faces...:)
He switched to being warm in his moms car.

  • Fixed?

You need one of these my man! Especially if you live in Central London.

  • X5.. West London's only transport option.

  • Round these parts the 25 is the preferred option.

  • This is where its at for 2009...

    So Fashion week daily says....

EDIT: It actually looks similar to the front of that porsche too!

  • Actually maybe you've a point... an X'must protect my own at all costs and screw everyone else in the process'5 might be the way forward. Though, round our way it's those massive Volvos which are the Socially Unacceptable Vehicle of choice.

  • Custom build FTW, OTP is a bit 2008...

  • more christiana bikes! i saw one in balham last week.
a friend has one, i think they're ace. mind you i've never used one.

  • I actually wouldn't mind one if we had space - I see a woman with something similar on my way to work most days
