Is this wheel any good?

  • i just bought a mavic gp4 on a dura ace 7700. for my front wheel, is it an ok wheel for my first build?

  • no, it seems to have no spokes.

  • haaaaaaa yeh it has spokes

  • It's sounds like a great wheel, good rims and a superb hub. Correct me if I'm wrong though, but I think GP4s are a tubular rim. You did know that before you purchased them didn't you?

  • nope , what does it mean?

  • If you don't know that then you've probably bought a wheel that is no use to you.

There are two types of tyre available for bicycles, clincher or tubular. Clinchers are used by 95% of riders as they are easy to install and repair should you get a puncture. Tubulars, or tubs, are harder to install as you have to either glue or tape them to the rim. If you get a puncture then you can't repair them very easily, if at all.

  • it takes tubular tyres good for the track, bad for the road

  • ahh gutted, well i guess when i buy it im either gona have to buy a tyre for around £40 ish or just sell it on.

  • not buy it, i mean when it arrives.

  • You can always rebuild it with a rim for clinchers...

  • Put it in the classifieds section. Sure someone on here will want it.

  • i was looking around and found these, they seem cheap enough for now i guess.

  • i payed £27 for it, do you think id get that back?

  • You can always rebuild it with a rim for clinchers...

Yea a new Rim to relace the wheel with wont cost that much, get a half decent one for £20

  • yes, any day

  • It's a good hub, so if you scrap the rim and replace it, you'll still be doing alright.

You can post and ask if anyone's will to take it for what you paid.

    (or more?)

  • What sort of condition is it in? It looks good from the photo and is probably worth a lot more than £27. The hub costs £50 new for a start.

  • Listed as a tub to avoid confusion.

    Brand new rim and hub.

You'll be able to easily sell it on.

Or, just ask the seller nicely to cancel the transaction.

  • i basically need a cheap 700c wheelset to carry on building my holdsworth up, this is like a kick in the nuts as im going to have to wait 2 weeks to get paid again =(

  • You may have inadvertently got yourself a good deal though as I think you could easily sell that wheel on for twice what you've paid for it. It must've cost around £70 in parts alone.

  • the hub used goes for 20, so don't ask to much for it, if you got it for 30, sell it for 30, no need to take the piss, really the most you could expect for it would be 50, 40 is more realistic.

  • I'll give you 10 quid.

  • If you want to try a tub, I can let you have an old one. PM me if you're interested.
