  • Accomodation is the most expensive thing in NY, so try the craigslists recommendations made in this (or another, I've forgotten) thread. You could even flat swap - as you live in "South Highgate" don't you? Lots of info and advice here: New York/US - urban75 forums

I found the hostels depressing last time and couldn't do 'em, even if they were cheap. There's more apartment based stuff than you get in London, but given the size of US food portions you don't really save money that way.

  • Rent an apartment in the city, there are lots on Craigslist. It should work out cheaper than a hotel.

  • if it was just me, i'd be happy to couch surf, never been a fan of hostels. but as said, happy for hotel. even location recommendations and then i can suss out hotels.

  • i hear 5th Avenue is quite nice.
apparently theres a guy called Donald Trump who might have some spare rooms.

  • Depends what you want to do and whether you've been before? For a first time, spend some of your time staying in Manhattan (around Union Sq maybe) and then you can be in walking distance of most bits of town, and always have a subway station close to you. Sort of $90-120 a night budget for a hotel in that bit.

There's better, cheaper independent B&B's up in Harlem that are worth the visit.

Read some Kinky Friedman and pretend to be English for that 'oooh your accent is so cute, lets give you a free beer' action.

  • And go to Manitoba's

  • I'm a born & raised NYker, let me know what you need & where you are at this very moment.

I'm drinking Scotch right now so apologies for the typing.

  • first trip to states. cool, manhattan. touristy shit mainly.

  • greenwich village or carroll gardens (brooklyn but real easy to get to manhattan and a really great area)... these are the places i would recommend to a first time visitor if you want to stay somewhere with a good nightlife outside your door. don't stay in midtown.

  • this looks like its got some character, great location - smith street has so many great bars and restaurants and the f train will get you to manhattan in 15 minutes

    this one too http://nymag.com/listings/hotel/union-street-b-and-b/

but i am biased towards brooklyn, especially this area!

  • Just got back from Ny and stayed in a hostel in Wburg... But not your normal hostel... Basically someones apartment but with 3 bunk beds in 2 rooms, so it's pretty much like staying in an apartment.... And it's 2mins from the L line subway and Wburg bridge if you're cycling.... Perfect.... PM Me for the contact details....

  • Oh.... It's just over $50 a night so nice and cheap....

  • Hotel Wales.

  • i'm visiting boston for a conference at the start of march and am heading to the big apple for a week afterwards. anyone recommend places to stay?

this place can't be beaten on price, location or comfort. it was really good.

If you have a couple bucks to spend try either of these. they are mighty nice and they are downtown. Don't stay uptown and especially don't stay midtown for god sake! If your going to be doing any riding or drinking downtown is where you want to be. Soho and Tribeca are good because it's quite posh but it's also quite arty. Robert Deniro owns half of Tribeca. They are also really close to the lower east side, Ludlow street, and the west village. So your set up to go in any direction and end up with some great neighborhoods and places to go.

While your there go to JONES (cajun restaurant) on Great Jones Street it will blow you mind. Best sould Jukebox in NYC!

    Have fun!

sorry man, haven't got all my injections! ;)

thanks rest of the peeps :)

  • Should try the Gershwin Hotel
Cheap as chips, right in the middle of Manhattan but more importantly it's next to the NYC Sex Museum! ;-)

  • Dogs, stayed here last summer, pretty cheap and great location (Rivington St)

  • My Mrs stayed there few years back, says it's really good value PLUS you'll be smack bang in the middle of hipster central!

  • Pretty similar to our Rivington Street then =)

    shit how central is that!

  • 34th street is like the equivalent of oxford street, central.. yea, but might make you go a little crazy after a couple days. too expensive for no character and overly crowded with sort of annoying people, in my humble opinion. you could stay a couple nights there to check it out and a couple nights in brooklyn for the real new york city experience!! :)

to be fair just looked again and its a few blocks down so may be a little more laid back!
