  • You're acting as more of a spirit guide. Not directly helpful, but we'd go now where without you.

    A bit like cheesus ?

  • I notice your very informative list is missing tangerine, do they do this colour or maybe some sort of David Dickinson hue?

  • Just spoken to Armourtex, they CAN mask off chromed areas like fork ends and drop-outs.

However, due to the temperatures involved, can't apply decals beneath the clear coat.

Is there a friend of the forum who can apply a more traditional clear coat over the work that Armourtex carry out and the decals that I will apply? I'd do it myself but have neither the space or the experience.

  • Am I helping in this thread ?

Yes. I like the sound of #80.

Let us know how you get on with Armourtex and masking off of the chrome. Just got a ridiculous quote from argos for a respray with chrome masking - proper sky high (200notes including decals- ouch!)

I thought that it might be too tricky for Armourtex, but post up the results pronto :-)

  • I notice your very informative list is missing tangerine, do they do this colour or maybe some sort of David Dickinson hue?

I would recommend number 26 - Winton orange.

  • this is a bit random but i've been looking for the Armourtex website for AGES and just found it - thought I would share the wealth - they list their colours and there are some contacts on there too: http://armourtex.tripod.com/

    Enjoy peeps!

  • they list their colours

Actually, sorry, they don't but they say they offer a "virtually unlimited colour selection"...

  • '...And it is so scrumtrellescant, I can barely move.'

  • I would recommend number 26 - Winton orange.

    Always wanted to ride him...

  • Does anyone know... if i get a bike with chrome stays powdercoated down at armourtext, will the chrome be preserved/ destroyed? The paint on the frame will need to be sandblasted.

    Cheers, Jim

  • saw that, from the 1st one...

So do Armortex do chrome masking? Chad - if it's any use to you I've been asking around up north about powdercoating. I'm moving to Leeds temporarily & was looking at options for powdercoating / respraying.

Guessing that armourtex means the chrome has to go?

  • d'ya mean you want to keep the chrome bits chrome? Because I'm sure they can mask those bits when they blast it and coat it, if that's what you mean.

  • hmm, I wonder how it will look if I sandblasted chrome...

  • they'd probably do a chemical bath if there's chrome.

  • yeah, looking to keep the chrome!

    ... dont do it ed!

  • Armortex will mask chrome, but they don't really like doing it, and the results can be a bit hit and miss. If you want it done, you really need to emphasis that it is a crucial part of what you want. Do expect fancy angled/curved masked edges. But as long as you keep it simple you should be ok.

  • Don't expect fancy angled/curved masked edges.

    Fixed?

  • hmm, I wonder how it will look if I sandblasted chrome...

It'll either end up looking dull like brushed stainless steel, or just come off, depending on the quality of the chrome. I used to work for an Aerospace Metal Surface Treatment company on the 'Hard Chrome' line.

  • Thinking of getting a frame resprayed and was wondering whether I need to fill in the wee holes left by the headbadge rivets before I drop it into Armourtex. If I don't fill them in, are they visible throuh the powdercoat?

    Can anyone advise please?

    Ta,

    Col.

  • Holes sound bad. Powdercoat only sticks to metal I think.

  • Maybe not the greatest pictures. I just got my frame back from Armourtex. I don't know the correct name of this colour, as they screwed up and painted my frame the wrong colour. They were very apologetic and were going to re-do it, but I decided to take it as is. They also knocked £9 off the price, so it only cost me £55.

I had originally asked for a custard creme-looking colour, but had misgivings about my choice, once I realised it would just look like I was riding a Surly.

Of course, now it will look like I'm maybe riding a Bianchi. Somewhat.

Anyway, the finish came out well.

  • Looks like Ed's missus' bike colour.

  • Then clearly Ed's missus has great taste!
