I advised the OP to call the cops rather than take it back, the line "I will be there in a flash with my buddies hammer and hacksaw." made me think that was their intention. The reason was that I was concerned they would get beaten up.
Then Rosmal said.
"Yup, very true, i learnt that lesson through a trip to the station in the back of a van."
to which hippy replied,
" What if you can prove ownership with, say, earlier photos or something? You still get arrested?".
My response to this was to show that my point was not that you might get arrested but that the new owner of the bike might give the OP a kicking for trying to recover it.
I hope I've explained it now, quite often the original point does get lost.
