    Bang!

Fuck yeah I knew that would be keeper!

  • Man i even annoy myself when i dont search properly!! But thanks for the info and the link. I'm off to make marzipan boobs, don't worry, shouldn't need a link for that one!...

  • So i know i'm relying on tyres to gain some height, but they dont state the size once inflated, as in the overall diameter do they?!?! I need summet deepish

  • Ok last post from me here, but i just found this quote,

"With any design aspect it is best not to go to extremes, the 10 5/8 inch (27 cm.) bottom bracket height or 2 ¾ (7 cm.) drop was where I built most of my frames, and is still a good average."

    Found it at: http://davesbikeblog.blogspot.com/2007/02/bottom-bracket-height.html

Some interesting info there if any one was interested still!!

    Cheers all

    paul

  • do you reckon if mercian have said my bb height will be 278mm, will they have included the 23 tyres in the measurement?

  • Sirius track bike, 23c tyres, 170mm cranks, 305mm BB height (floor-Cntr)

  • damn i'm just starting to realise that my first fixed gear cnversion project which will be completed this week after several months planning and execution is a FUBAR.

Old 1970's Dawes Windsor road bike, don't know frame size, BB height 250, 170mm cranks, on 700c x 25 tyres :(

Not ridden fixed before - now realising I'm quite likely to get a pedal strike and fuck myself up a bit the first time I go around a corner (and worse, embarass myself in public)

Maybe not even a 165mm crank swap can save me. Looks like I will now have to replace the only part of the original bike that remains. Anyone recommend a good affordable frame?

At this point I should also say that of all the guides I looked at relating to conversions (and there were many) I NEVER ONCE saw anyone mentioning this pitfall (and wasn't clever enought to think of it all by myself...)

  • Soooooo... Looking at the data, Dammit wins with his much-cherished geared Rush closely followed by Gabes on his Cannondale track... What did we learn, Tommy?

  • How do you know it's too low? Even with the most fucked builds you simply avoid pedal strike by slowing enough before a corner so that you can take it upright..

  • thanks hippy - but bear in mind this is likely easier said than done for me rght now...bu i'm sure i can get the hang of it.

Could also look at restoring the original wheel set (27") with a fixed hub to give a bit more height also (albeit only 4mm i think), + higher tyres, and maybe i can find a suitable 160 or 165 crank to go with it (but by the time i've fucked around with all that I might as well buy a frame)!

The bottom bracket on my conversion's barely 24cm from the floor. I've been riding it with 170mm cranks for two years and I'm still in one piece.

Do a wee experiment for me, eh? Put one of your pedals in the 6 o'clock position and grab the bike by the saddle. Now lean it over till the pedal touches the floor. I bet the bike's at an alarming angle at the point of contact - much further than you'd be able to comfortably cope with while pedalling.

Hippy's right, keep the heid on corners and it'll be fine.

  • thx for the reassurance. will try that.

    1. That this is probably my best ever thread. Even better than the Spotted one.

    2. We also learn that this talk of conversions always have lower B.B than fixed specific frame is rubbish and any difference there is tends to be very small.

  • Also that my Rush is a 4" travel full suspension bike, and that it is designed to "sag" when the rider is on it, so that will be distorting the figures somewhat.

  • fuck me this is an interesting thread

how high is my bb? where does it fit amongst other bb's

will i be more cool if i have an extreme bb, should it be the highest or the lowest, or do i want to blend in with a moderate height bb

will other fixie skidders respect my bb, or can i use shim/inverse shim to make my bb positioning more cool

what colour rims go with my bb

  • I rode an old road frame with a ridiculously low BB. You'll get used to it in no time. As Hippy said, just slow/dont whip round corners. If possible, take corners a little wider than you usually would, but you'll get to know how much lean is achievable on your bike quickly.
U'd also get more clearance if you rode spds/narrower pedals.

  • thanks hippy - but bear in mind this is likely easier said than done for me rght now...bu i'm sure i can get the hang of it.

I would stay with the 700c wheel. I had a 27" wheel set for a short while, and getting quality tires locally became difficult.

A better way to raise your bottom bracket height might be to replace your fork with one that has a greater axle-to-crown length. Or you could modify your existing fork to have less rake. Most shops should be able to help you do this for less than the cost of a new fork.

  • Don't forget to take in account of the pedals size and thickness, clipless pedal being quite compact tend to have less pedal strike on the gravel.

I found out the hard way when I have an old touring pedal that was quite wide (as wide as my shoes) and consquencly get pedal strike, they even want a better redundancy package, for fuck sake.

  • thanks for all the feedback. feeling better now. In fact I have MKS Sylvan trac kpedals with clips on it - i became suspicious of the bb height being a potential problem because the clips when hanging down on underside of pedal do not clear the floor.

See how i get on, then will probably look at switching to clipless narrow pedal if is is a problem. Have not rode cliples before but how hard can it be.

fork thing sounds useful as well thanks braveeagle3.

  • As i have tape handy

    BB: 29.5cm
    F: 54
    T: 700cx28

  • mines 28.5cm floor-to-centre, genesis flyer size 60cm, 700x23c tyres.

    interesting database.

  • ok, so my hillbrick has a BBH of 300 which works perfectly on the boards. my NAG is 280 and i am concerned that this may not be enuff.... i assume kierin track banking is not a severe as an indoor velo??

i haven't been out on the boards with the NAG yet....maybe its a case of sucking it??

  • one mirrion gnat's chuffs.

  • not much eh?

  • CAN ANYONE ASSIST WITH THIS: my hillbrick has a BBH of 300 which works perfectly on the boards. my NAG is 280 and i am concerned that this may not be enuff.... i assume kierin track banking is not a severe as an indoor velo??
