might it cause problems with google spidering the site though might'en it?
No. A google spider is just like any other web client such as you and your iMac.

VB, since you will be doing redirects, I won't even have to update my bookmarks and slickrun shortcuts, will I?
Woot Woot.

No, it will all just work. No link anywhere would need to be changed.
If I did it today, the only thing that might give it away is the address bar changing colour in Firefox or Google Chrome.

hi vb, fully support this proposal. i would go so far as to say enforce https for everyone. it also reminds me of this proposal that was put out by various radical tech collectives recently:
We want to stop Data Retention of the type that is being imposed on us by the E.U. Directive 2006/24/EC because it is a preemptive surveillance of communication structures:
Imagine the postal services kept a record of everyone who sent a mail to you. When. Who. How. Where. This is exactly what is happening no with your email, your phone calls and other electronic communications.
We as providers are forced to store YOUR communication metadata. This is forcing us to work as outsourced police forces. We don't want this. We will pour as much sand into this machine of suspicion as we possibly can. And we encourage everyone else to do the same! Do not support this attack on privacy!
We will continue to fight against Data Retention in any way possible and we will support each other in our different efforts to fight it.ref: https://www.aktivix.org and many others.

- When you receive the error message, click Yes.
- In Internet Explorer, go to Tools, Internet Options, click the Security tab; make sure that in "Select a zone..." window that Internet is selected.
- Click Custom Level and scroll down about half way to "Display mixed content" in the Miscellaneous section.
- Change it from Prompt to Enable.
- Click OK, Yes, and OK. The change should take effect immediately.
- When you receive the error message, click Yes.

Httpstfu!
Nope. I'd simply 302 redirect all http:// links to https:// and update the sitemaps accordingly.
Google do spider SSL pages and sites, and don't penalise you for having your site in SSL.
