For a cheap ish job spraying is the job, its less expensive but will cost you more time.
I did what Johnp did (just a couple more coats of primer) and it is wearing fine for a rattle can job, it does chip quite easily compared to powdercoating but with the extra coats of primer it hasnt even started to rust yet.
