unfortunately i dont know how i will manage to navigate a big bike in a box for the 3 days before the event in venice... think i could hire one out there?

you can ride any bike as long as its roady (or cyclocross)

some people ride tandems, penny farthings or even scooters

nah, you can ride anything it seems, seen pics of people riding mtbs which is apparently against the rules too.

yeah, we did the 135k route, the guy on the 1937 Raleigh did it singlespeed (with a flipflop for the big hills!)
