  • Toby - I'm trying to track down 10.3 installations disks for you. Will let you know later today if I've been successful.

  • Thanks Andy, will be great if you do find some.

  • Toby
I have read the thread, you want 10.3 but just trying to help.
Just found Mac OS X 10.4.2 Install disc 1 and 2.
It was for my Powerbook G4 .
let me know if its any use.
    GrowUp

  • Hmmmm.... lets give it a go, is that all the disks, 2?

If it doesn't work then hopefully Andy will come up trumps with the 10.3 :)

    (cheers for the PM btw)

  • My colleague who may have the 10.3 install disks is checking his library of software. I'll get back to you as soon as I hear something from him. He definitely has 10.4 though.

  • I've just been looking on the apple support site, I'm kinda getting the impression that the 10.4.2 disks are the update disks for lower releases of 10.4 which makes me think that they won't install a whole fresh copy of 10.4 or indeed upgrade from 10.1.... how many disks do you have for 10.4 Andy?

  • I've only got 10.5 disk Toby.

Anyway, upgrade disks should have the entire installation on them - you get a partial install if you're already on say 10.4 and a full install if you're on 10.3. I'm happy to be corrected on this though.

Had lunch with my colleague and he's going to check on the 10.3 disks tonight.

  • Thanks Andy, you're a saint.

10.5 will kill myu puny 800mhz g4 so lets give that a miss :)

Let me know how you get on with the 10.3 disks. Ta

  • hey bobob, not been able to get online too much the past few days hence the lack of reply, drop me your address in a PM and i'll do my best to post it tomorrow.

  • Toby - just PM'd you.

  • hold down option and the antrés key.

  • ...maybe bump your RAM up a bit as it's pretty cheap to do so. Crucial are pretty good for it

got a 7yr old 17" g4 1GHz powerbook which slowed down the last couple of mths. after reading this, i bought a 1Gig memory off that site. installed it last night....vvrrroooommm! noticeable diff. it's like a new computer! looking forward to another 7yrs. thanks guys.

need some extra storage now. the tiny 60Gb HD is close to max capacity :(

  • How much did you pay Ralph (all in)?

    I might do the same...

  • £40 for the memory. well worth it IMO

  • Cool... thanks matey :)

  • So... i've got all the disks I need now!!! Thanks everyone :)

Off to install, but before I do, I want to wipe the HD clean of everything and put a nice clean install on, will install disks do this or do I need to do something special first? I know its format c: or whatever on a pc but on a mac... haven't the foggiest!

    Any ideas?

    Ta

  • Do a search first then if no joy
after loading CD do a restart and hold down C key.
    Choose Installer, then disc utilities.
Select the hard drive to erase.
    Click erase.
    Click options.
Select checkbox for Zero all data.
    Click OK
    Click Erase.

    Cannot be 100% but whatever...

  • Thanks squire.... love the whatever bit! hah hah... :)

Will let you know how I get on!

  • Zeroing the HD is pointless (unless you have something you want to hide) and will only put it through unnecessary torment, just pop the disk in and install, it will ask if you would like to upgrade (if there's a previous install) or do a fresh install - just do a fresh install.

Disk Utility should be used to reformat a new HD or change the formatting type if porting it from a PC, etc, feel free to start Disk Utility and make sure you're using an HFS+ formatted drive (recommended) before you go though.

OS X defrags (well not exactly, but the analogy's sound) as it goes along, as well as a host of beautiful background maintenance, so you don't need to do any maintenance on the HD side as you use the Mac, in general try to avoid poking around with anything and enjoy the simple Mac experience.

  • At last a pro on the case. Thanks Jono.
I am a "creative" so have limited knowledge.
    Please make this happen Bobob.

  • The silence worries me. I have visions of Toby sat ashen faced with a thousand yard stare whilst trying to get the damn Mac to work.

    fixed.

  • nah, more than 6mths for sure...old powerbook is going stealth! most applications will go and clearing out most contents. this will only be a forum/surfing specific machine

got a brand new big imac arriving on tues :p

  • I'm not exactly a pro (slash geek), but fell into ripping apart/fixing/servicing Macs to keep myself in funds through uni, I've encountered most software/hardware problems, but try to avoid talking about it as people go all glass-eyed.
