I use a front wheel cover for polo as it saves the spokes getting trashed and you can use the wheel to block the ball better. Check this link about how to make them http://legitbikepolo.com/how-to-make-it/ pretty easy and you can make the disc from an old For Sale sign.
Try it out as it'll cost nowt, if you like it then go buy one.
