sounds like its his browser thats borked ratherer than the link you sent him, if hes running windows maybe get him to point his computer at:
http://onecare.live.com/site/en-gb/default.htm
and run a full system scan, its MS own virus/spyware checker it normally finds a lot of things your AV misses. takes about 30 min on average. -

The link was

Innocent enough I thought. I checked it later in different browsers, but had no problem.
So hael, you may have been on the money. Cheers. I'll make sure he checks with one care.

Must be a Vista tantrum? At work, we're on XP, and my IE hasn't reacted at all.

I only went on IE because i wanted to have a go on the onecare scanner that hael recommended [won't work with firefox apparently].. then I came back here to get the onecare link and clicked the wrong bloody link..
hope whatever it is isn't catching because this would be the third PC i've accidentally infect this week.
i hate windows.

eeek smith you have the lurgi too! Just checked it on a Vista machine and no popups :/ we run Sophos anti virus here which is great but you have to pay for it, I run AVG Free at home and is just as good.

The only other thing I can think of is some weird browser bug where the link is clicked and your not logged in yet and its the Google ads auto opening?
I hate windows too ;)
I will convert the world!
I emailed my twin today, and included a link from the WTF Its Snowing thread.
It caused 34 pop-ups, and froze his computer completely. He had to do a hard-reset, and an immediate virus scan on re-boot.
Just reporting this really, to save someone else from the same fate.
