  • so, here I am all happy and proud of my £100 iMac G4 17inch 800mhz 256mb ram mac..... I bought it for the mrs really but i'm kinda getting used to its odd ways and i'm almost fond of it now!

Anyway, what i didn't realise is that OS X 10.1.5 is pretty primitive... I can't even install firefox or safari for gawds sake... anyone got any tips for me as a first time mac user... i know there's plenty of you on here... can I upgrade my software or is my new mac too old?

If I can upgrade, anyone know how/got the disks?

  • Might have somethin' knockin' around. I'll have a shoofty... You should be able to stick the latest OS on there tho'... I think... Afraid, my MacGuru status expired a long time ago...

  • format c:

  • I'm just following you around...

  • Clean the gunk out the mouse, should free up some processor speed.

  • youre not gonna be able to stick the latest os as its made of intel chips. cant quite recall which big cat youre looking for. might be OS X 10.4 which is Tiger. If you cant find an install disc, download it off a torrent site and burn on to dvd.

  • I'm enjoying the company.. watch that step!

  • Clean the gunk out the mouse, should free up some processor speed.

    did that... found some pubes

  • Cheers Joey.. lemme know eh?

  • Format :hippy .... lfgss dissolves

  • fsck- hippy then reboot
It's the top secret Cupertino backdoor...

  • You cheeky little devil!

  • i got a similar spec on my old imac and it runs 10.4 fine. when you do the install do a custom one and get rid of all the languages you're unlikely to need as that'll free up a fair amount of space, you should be able to do the same for printer drivers too. normally frees up quite a bit, sometimes up to a coupla gig

  • Think I may still have my old 10.3 install disc knocking around somewhere...

  • +1 on the 10.4, thought it'll still be slow as fuck mind.

10.3 actually would be acceptable, since 10.4 have some feature that would drive the poor slow mac out of it's mind.

+1 in retrospect 10.3 would be better, i noticed my mac slow up a bit when i went to 10.4 but it was pretty much out of use by then so wasn't too much of an issue.

maybe bump your RAM up a bit as it's pretty cheap to do so. Crucial are pretty good for it

  • Cheers guys, all very useful, sounds like 10.3 is the way to go!

Ok, photoben, if you do have them knocking about am happy to buy you beers at southies if you ever get down there, i'll give them straight back to you after i've installed it.

As for disk space, that's not really an issue as it has a 80 or 90gb hd in it, i'm not going to use it for much else then surfing the net and iTunes :)

  • i think i have some instal disks for tiger, and lepord lieing around, will see if i have 10.3

  • I've got the Leopard install disks (although smallbrownbike has them currently) if you need them Toby.

  • Whats Leopard Andy, 10.3?

  • Ah... just googled, that's 10.5, I think that may kill my mac.... unless of course I upped my RAM?

  • I don't know the spec of my Mac but it's an iMac G4 and it runs fine with Leopard. The discs contain details of the minimum hardware spec (although a quick Google will probably throw up the same info).

  • Tiger's best for a G4, but still max the RAM if it's a cheap enough upgrade.

(Leopard will run but will be noticeably slower.)

  • Tigers... leopards... I feel like i'm on the big game show!

Leopard = I need more ram but says it meets the minimum requirements

    Tiger = same....

So, i need more RAM (baaaaa) scotty

  • Leopard = more new features & newer software compatibility
Tiger = faster (on anything below a 1.25ghz G4), older software compatibility & a proven OS (over the years) for your particular machine.
