I love the idiosyncracy of placenames. There's LOADS of this stuff in England. I come from a place that has three nearby villages called Woughton, Broughton and Loughton. ALL three "~oughton" parts of these names are pronounced differently - something like *Woof*ton, *Broar*ton and *Lauw*ton.
I get annoyed when people pronounce the L in Holborn.
