I have a retro Modolo one for a tenner, it's nutted but not especially long reach, NOS (unused). PM if interested with an email address and I'll send you a pic. BTW, it's anodised a very dark brown, almost black, if that makes any difference.

I've got a really low quality 1980s nutted front brake that you're welcome to have but, to be honest, I imagine it would look really rubbish on a Mercian and it isn't very effective.
I put a new Shimano 105 on my conversion at the weekend and I had the same problem - the allan key fitting was a couple of millimeters wider that the back hole in the fork. Even on my cheapy bike I wasn't keen to take a file to it but I went for it and it worked really well. It took quite a while but it didn't damage the paintwork at all and the new brake fits really well and works much much better than the old one.
I actually tried a drill first but that didn't feel very clever to gave it up quite quickly and went to the hardware shop and round file for about £3.

if you've got a slow spinning, high torque drill/access to one (ive got one if u live near camberwell) then def drill and buy a new style brake! in my opinion its by far the best option!

Thanks taki, I think ok going to try a nut brake first, if I don't like that I'll be in touch for your drill, I'm just up the road in west dulwich!
Danewesley, thanks for the offer but retro do corsa has a slighty prettier one going! -

Acor make a long reach nutted front brake, about a tenner from your LBS. Dual pivot.

I picked one up recently for my old Bianchi at Simpsons Cycles in Kentish Town.
I'm just finishing off my vintage Mercian build and the front brake drilling is too small for an Allen key fitting so I need a nut fitted front brake. I spoke to brixton cycles today and they said look at SJS cycles but the only ones I could find on there were a Shimano pair for £54!
So if anyone has one lying around or any better suggestions than SJS would be much appreciated!
