Not writing off manhattan, but perhaps you might want to take the advice of someone who resided there for a very long time.
Not sure if you met Jack (Brooklyn Jack) who was here this summer, but if you are there earlier in the month, he is sure to take good care of you.
Polo is great in New York as well, Lower East side, manhattan, sundays.
Main thing to remember about New York, it is illegal to drink on the streets, $25 fine each time.

Manhattan is a big place and everytime I've stayed there I've stayed in the right areas. Sure if you stay in Times Sq it's like Piccadilly but that is a tiny, tiny area that is best avoided - more to Manhattan than Times Sq, like there's more to London than Picc Circ/Leicester Sq.
Brooklyn's probably quite a cool place to live, my mate lives on Bedford Ave and I've stayed there a couple of times but it's pretty boring to go out there
It's like going to London and spending all your time in Putney

Spoken like a true rookie holmes. Brooklyn is the best choice for the best deals and it's pretty close to shit/most of the bike friendly people around. Manhattan is a waste of your time if you're on any kind of a budget (unless you score an apt swap on craigslist). Brooklyn's OK man, I always stay with friends in Manhattan but a week in a flophouse in Chinatown last year with the gf (yuk!) equals I'm deffo gonna get an apartment over the river next time... I saw Dangeruss and tilover introducing themselves on the NYCFG site and that's probably the best way to get sorted out, always better to get hooked up by the locals... I can't wait to get out there again... WIth my bike... :D

Yeah bear mtn/river road/anywhere in westchester but don't come to nyc to ride out in to the country, Outside london is way more picturesque homie. In NYC you ride yer ass to coney, up to the bronx zoo, over to Difara's in midwood for some pizza, etc.

open to suggestions, everything for rest of trip is being paid for so am happy to shell out for hotel whilst in New York. Myself plus girlfriend, so has to be central-ish and be able to get to most things. :)
