Got my project

  • Hi Guys...
well i got my winter project bike..
was desperate to get my hands dirty again after building all the raleigh burners and was keen for a fixed speed
so here we have it ive combined them all!!!

    1984 Raleigh Quasar 12
    501 Reynolds with aerospace tubing

i got this from ebay complete minus the wheels, the pics you see or as it landed plus the catalogue pcis and a few completes i dredged off the net

looking forwardto getting in about it, ive already stripped it as far as possible and im going to pick up the relevnt tools to do the rest tomorrow

the colour is awesome its like a shark grey into a pearly white silver . the aerospace tubing is awesome it also featured on the team pro burners

looking forwarded o gettin it up and running and crisp and clean, first decison is whether to go with pursuit bullhorn bars, stick with the originals or got for full track drops.

colour scheme will be mainly silver chrome components with some anodised gold details, white parts prob bar tape wheels or tyres and toe straps. tan leather saddle prob a charge sppon

    appreciate your thoughts

  • I like it, get track drops.

You gonna file/cut out the drive-side dropout? Might make getting good tension difficult.

  • Cock

yeah gonna need to file that off, toying with the idea of filing off the braze ons while im at it

what makes you say track drops? i was planning on using a goldfinger brake lever will it work ok with track drops tho? my first thought was no?

  • I just like them, gonna try and get some black B123AA's for myself. No idea if the lever will fit. The clamp certainly won't. Just ride brakeless.

  • yeah 501 conversion, gotta have track drops and NobrakeTM !

    fucking hell.

  • what the fuck is with the hoverbiketm?

  • Awesome dude!!!!
    Got a few more pics?
    LOLs!!!!!!!

reckon i'll stick with the stock bars
tho if someone can point me in the direction of white track style grips that would be good

either that or pursuit style bullhorns but im still not sure if i like the look, just think id use the positions more

i know mate sorry, there not even that good - cameraphone!

  • keep the road drops and hoods.

  • what the fuck is with the hoverbiketm?

ha! I didn't spot that at first. It must be that aerospace tubing, I want one!

  • see this thread

no need my nickname is cock

  • not very nice though is it?

    Just don't ride brakeless.

guess not doesnt fuss me tho man lol

  • Seriously though, d14vd_h...

    1. Driveside dropout. Get it in a vice, mark out how far you want to extend the slot. Drill hole first. Use a small pilot dril, then keep opening the hole out until it's the right diameter. Cut along existing slots to meet the hole you've drilled. round everything off with a small files and emery tape. Take it easy. Mark it out properly.
    2. Keep the bars. Chop and flop.
    3. Get a "Cross-top" or similar lever. A dual pivot brake would be good if you can get one cheap. It doesn't look like you'll need a long drop caliper which is good 'cos most of them look shite. I can vouch for that, I've an old conversion with an Alhonga caliper that works fine but won't win any beauty contests.
    4. Cranks look serviceable. If the BB is not a sealed unit, take apart and pack with grease.
    5. Get yourself a decent saddle.
    6. Ride it until it's wrecked. Don't spend too much money on doing it up. Spend a resonable amount on decent rims, you can transfer them to another bike later.

    Enjoy it.

    Awesome man thanks...
dont have much access to workspace or tools cos of where i am had to leave it all in glasgow.
    my plan was
    charge spoon saddle
tidy up the frame as much as possible including sorting the dropout, think i will be file and emory paper only though and elbow grease!
    new headset
stock bars flipped and chopped or are is white white grips or tape
    goldfinger lever
front caliper if i can source dont know what im looking for though!?
need a seatpost bolt and quill for the stem
rebuild the crank greasing like a mad man
new toe straps in white or brown
wheels built by bricklane bikes in white or silver prob deep v
nice fresh bolts and grease everywhere thats necessary

  • no need my nickname is cock

That may be the saddest thing I've ever read.

  • charge spoon saddle

Good choice for 20GN. I have a black one, good all weather saddle and fairly light.

Save your elbows. Use a hacksaw. Mark lines on the outside of the dropout that continue along from existing dropout sides with a sharp point (scriber, or craft knife blade will do) cut just inside them with hacksaw. File to finish.

awesome im bound to be full of questions on the way
after i use the search function ill ask you if you dont mind
as soon as its built ill be out for the rides and drinks meets
    cheers
    d

  • Get in there son, lots of people who forgot where they started will try to drag you enthusiasm down. you like it, got it for a good price, enjoy. Spend what you can in components and if you like the fixed gear way can pass them on to anothner frame. Don't take half of whats said on this site seriously. oh and HTFU LOL and : ) and : ( -Welcome

  • Nice lugs!
Are ya gonna keep the original paintwork or respray? Glad to see the bastards haven't ground you down.

  • thanks lads yeah i love it does everything i want right now, its raleigh, its a bit unique, it lets me build choosing all the bits i want and keeps me entertained over the winter, and most importantly you get that satisfaction at the end knowing its custom and you built it.

i love the original colour scheme and thats what partly made me choose to really go for this bike from hte raleigh range that and the aerospace tubing which i love. i also think the colour will work well with white tan and bits of gold which is my intended scheme

as you say buy components i can afford as they will be transferable later!
    cheers for the positive comments
