  • correct me if i'm wrong but isn't usb2.0 faster than firewire?

on paper, yes. in reality, no.
usb has a slightly higher upper limit, but if you take an average over a sustained period, firewire is faster.
also, firewire putls less load on the cpu than usb2.
and then we have fire wire 800 which is twice the speed of usb2!

  • well ive had my G4 powerbook for over 6 years now and its still going strong, can't fault a mac as far as i can see, would love a new one, but being a poor ass and broke (working in education = piss all money) means i'll just have to keep happy with my G4.

  • yes. you underpowered, archaic-mac-user.

  • with mac they always have a bad batch as i said b4 . . .
    its goin 2 be a hit or a miss . . .

  • yeah, i had a pretty funny conversation with the tech support guys who told me that my macbook pro was supposed to be electrocuting me.
it's a design flaw with all of their aluminium-cased laptops apparently. when they're plugged in with the shorter extension cable (which isn't earthed) they send mild electric shocks through the case. it can get quite painful on the wrists.
my gf's powerbook is even worse for it!

  • I wanted to buy one of the old black macbooks. can you still get them?

offer to buy the stylists ^^^^^

ha! i always got that with my old pbook. it got to the point where it just didnt matter to me being mildly electrocuted.

  • my info is clearly out of date then, must bone up on the latest techie knowhows

  • revival of old topic.

went to see these yesterday at regent st. very nice.

i have a 17 mbp at the mo on tiger but fancy a new machine.

i do product design at uni so use most the adobe apps; photoshop illustrator, flash etc
also considering running bootcamp to get pro e or auto cad.

anyone offer some good advice as to a machine to upgrade to?
i would like a laptop for convenience (never take the mbp anywhere though as its big and heavy)

    any advice much appreciated

  • the current macbooks have no firewire, the new macbook pros, like the previous models, do have firewire.

  • macbooks are such solid machines
had mine two years now and I dont believe it has crashed once
once you have used one, everything else just feels inferior

ive had mine a few months, havent even done any 'real' work on it yet, but it crashes pretty frequently.

something wrong there then. owned 5macs and it takes a lot to crash osx. like trying to rotate a 1gb file in CS4, process in capture1 and download scat porn all at the same time. and even then it will be just one of the apps not the OS.
try applejack or repair disk permissions

  • you have CS4 garry? is it the beta?

  • i have CS3, was reading about 4 which i probably why i typed '4' .
can't be bothered to upgrade to 4 until i find out a bit more about it i may need the extended version which is a bit pricey.

ahh so you lied. I realised last week that CS4 was soon to be realised...i'm in the process of acquiring it ;) although the degree of work i do would only require Illustrator 1

  • Sweet, my Mac Book has had 2 replacement hard drives in 3 yerars and I still love it

  • they look like HPs

mm! ha! i saw this on yayhooray today, made me laugh. nloody stupid.

  • i fondled one in a shop yesterday. you can't fault the aluminum construction. it makes all those platicky pc's look like er.. like plasticky boring pc's

  • I'm disapointed in all honesty

pah. now, i had a titanium powerbook back when macs were macs, aye. Aluminium? it makes for harsh, unforgiving processing.

Asus made a carbon fibre laptop a while ago. I heard that it was laterally stiff yet Y2K-compliant.

  • I got a 2.4GHz black macbook earlier this year.....a tad disappointed to see I'm out of date already!

I love the OS but am less impressed with the hardware: it's needed a new CD/DVD drive and a new logic board already. Good job my work paid for it or I'd be pretty fekked off.

Rumour has it that if it needs to go back 3 (or is it 4) times in one year they replace it FOC. Maybe if I shake it hard enough it'll turn into a shiny new one?!

  • more or less, faster than Firewire 400*, but slower than Firewire 800* (*the number is megabyte per second).

USB 2.0 max speed is 480 MByte/s, nowhere near as fast as Firewire 800.

just saw the whole thing - no fucking Blu-ray?!? they're having a fucking bubble.

My inner scientific-units nazi couldn't be held back, I'm sorry:

Maximum channel capacity of USB 2 is 480mbps, megabits per second, which is around 60MBps, megabytes per second.

Same applies to Firewire 400 and 800 (50 megabytes and 100 megabytes per second).

The main difference is, however, that USB 2.0 use packeted transfer, relying on the CPU for translation. Firewire uses a dedicated controller.

In the real world, Firewire 400 is generally considerably faster, lower latency and more robust than USB 2.

I was looking forward to getting a new Macbook to replace my iBook, but no firewire means I can't use my mbox or avastor drives, which is half the reason I use a laptop. Loads of people are in the same situation.

Stupid, really, considering firewire controllers cost pennies these days.
