Started teaching a friend a couple of weeks back as she'd never ridden a bike before. Found an empty tennis court and used one of my BMXs as I figured the lowness and the absence of 'complicated' things like gears would help. Started with just getting her to ride in a straight(ish) line learning to start and use the brake to stop safely, then worked on turns to both sides and from that to riding in circles.
By the end of an hour she was managing all that well enough.
I found it useful to get them to focus on just one thing at a time i.e. looking where they want to go rather than at the floor etc rather than trying to correct all faults at once.
