Bob Jackson or Condor

Posted on
  • Looking for a frame for my new project.

I've done all the research humanly possible including trying out both. Still can't choose between a new Bob Jackson or a Condor Pista.

Bob Jackson wins hands down on looks but performance is key.

Any advice from those who've owned either of the two?

  • not ridden a bj. own a condor.
    things i like about it:
    it's not that heavy.
geometry is balanced between full on track and a road frame so no silly high BB and angles not super steep but still a responsive ride.
frame isn't noodly like some steel frames shaped tubing means it's stiff in the right areas but comfortable on long rides.
dropouts are long so can accommodate flipping between ratios.
despite popular opinion it's actually a good price for the frame/carbon fork/headset. the complete bike is even better value.
i like the fact that they aren't really hipster bikes (this could be a minus point for some people)
one of the reasons i chose the condor was my short inseam for my height, compact geometry gives me more standover.

i doubt you would be disappointed with either bike.

  • I own a 54cm Vigorelli Track built this summer.

It's Lugged and the tubing's Reynolds 631. So it's light and very supple/smooth to ride.
The chainstays are oval the whole length so still feel fairly stiff/quick.
The dropouts are thick and forged, and the paint is thick too.

I've never ridden the Condor, but from it's name (Pista) I'd imagine it's more track focused.

Vigorelli means 'Road & Track' or something similar. Therefore the Bob Jackson is drilled for a brake, has oval forks (good if you run a brake), has (relatively) relaxed geometry, and water bottle bosses as standard. You can even have mudguard eyelets if you like!

I'm very happy with mine, I gets about 80 miles a week put on it. Some city riding with risers and lots of longer riding in the counry with drops. I bought it as a bike-for-life and that's what it feels like. I think those frames are a bargain, and so do many others because I think they're waiting list has got pretty silly since the start of the year.

  • Wasn't the Vigorelli the most famous velodrome in Italy?
But what do I know? I've just bought a Bob Condor frame and it's rubbish.

  • Looking at the Condor It's less track focused than I thought. In fact it looks very much like a more modern interpretation of the Vigorelli idea. I imagine both bikes they share similar comfort/performance bias.

  • Yep your right, Vigorelli is/was near Milan. But the frames designed for it aren't steep angled etc. Cinelli's own Vigorelli frame's pretty laid back for a track bike.

What the hell is a Bob Condor frame? hehe.

  • You should ask this guy! (although I think he might be biased) ;)

  • Both good bikes. I think that they both suffer (unfairly) from sterotypes.

Bob Jackson - BLB hipster wannabees
    Condor - posh roadie wannabees

Bob's are made in England, Condor in Italy. There's absolutely loads of each around London.

Condor have a new frame called the percorsa (or something, can't remember) which comes in at £350. Might be worth a look.

There's lots of other frames around that price which you might like - you can get a hand made custom Mercian for under £600 if you're prepared to wait.

  • Wasn't the Vigorelli the most famous velodrome in Italy?

It was, although it's currently used as an American Football stadium. The Giro di Lombardia used to finish on the Vigorelli and it was considered the fastest track in the world and was widely used for hour record attempts through the 1930s until the late 1950s.

the Potenza was an older model, they dropped it for last year. it used to be more expensive than the pista - maybe they have brought it back as an entry level model

  • @nimhbus - it's this one;

I think the f + f is set to retail for £349 with a complete bike from around £549. It's a steel frame using COM12.5 tubing.

  • That's the one. Still can't remember the name, though. Pretty sure it began with P

  • It's written on the top tube - can't make it out but think it says Potenza?

  • Looks nice!

  • I think it's Pudenda; female specific geometry.

  • Hmm, it might be Perineum?

  • Or piss-flap. The Condor Piss-flap. It has a ring to it. Or through it.

  • it's a shame they don't make the old potenza (deda EOM16.5 steel) really nice bikes.

  • my mate (old blue eddy) just bought a woodrup from Cavendish cycles. really nice track frame from a leeds frame builder, quite similar to the bob's, but a bit lighter.
i'd recomend going to cavendish and having a look - there £450 but in my oppinion better than both bob's and condor pista, plus a little less seen round london than both!
