@ Charco - the chainline was fine and chainring/sprocket were only a couple of months old.
@ Hippy - a chain wear issue was the only thing left when in the process of elimination and as it turned out the SRAM 3/32 chain I had had worn and stretched.
A spanking new 1/8 chain fixed the problem and three months later still no problems.
