Cracked forks - down to headset?

The forks on my old BSA sheered off halfway down the steerer tube this morning! (I cacked myself!) Seems strange, could an incorrect headset set up cause something like this?

    Does anyone have any ideas?

    A picture is needed.

  • A picture poll is needed.

    Fixed.

    Will this do?

  • nope, i think the "old" is the problem.

  • Fixed.

    Fuck yeah, let's have a poll !!

    :)

  • Will this do?

    Brilliant picture :) :D

  • Here's a few pics of the damage;
    Uno
    Dos
    Tres

Any help would be much appreciated. Ta.

  • Bad news but i suspect that white square in the photos may have had something to do with & returned to the scene of the crime just as you took the photos.
But i can't say what really happened.

  • just one of those things.

Steel fatigues over time, especially fork steerers. Who knows if this bike was in a few accidents once upon a time?

  • The quill bolt might have been too might force on the expander nut or wedge . Look at it in the first pic, the steerer is slightly flared where it sheared away.

At least it's not the frame that's fucked.
