  • haha we're discussing the merits of cantilevers over disc brakes on lfgss!

    +rep for the C+ thread !

  • then what is the airspeed velocity of a laden bob jackson?

Ahh I used to lust after a Sutra but got a Smoke instead, I just didn't have the extra £600 at the time.

    the newer Sutra even have the proper gear for touring;

love the new rear rack with the low mounting points, though not as nice as Hassan's.... (is that a tubus?).

  • might do the Camino Santiago Compostela Pilgrimage next year. not that im religous or anything but with the scenery, food, company on offer, just can't say no! doing it with a spanish mate. he's not a speedy nor a strong cyclist, so we'll be taking it easy. going light as well, possibly just one rack as the plan is to sleep in albergues (cheap) or churches/convents (free!?).

dont have a bike for it yet, but would like to go singlespeed. well, depends on the route we take, the northern coast is mountainous. cant wait. never cycle toured before, so pretty excited about it. do i have to build a tourer?!? are touring bikes, complete with paniers, avail for hire?!? should be just a 3-4day trip. anyway, still a long way to go

  • most definitely tubus, german engineering!

the compostela pilgramige wold be fantastic, i drove part of that route last summer, through the Pyrenees. gorgeous landscape. have fun!

  • i did my little break to exeter via the south coast line fixed on my surly ... details here...

The only mod i did was change my gi and panniers... for me this was the cheapest option and gave me the taste of riding camping etc.

  • Since this is turning into a cycle touring forum, anyopne got advice on a good tent that for around £200 that is nice and light, two porches and sleeps 3 (2 really)?

  • two porches and sleeps 3 (2 really)?

good luck i got this roberts tent 2.7kg sleeps 2 sitting up kinda has an outta shell which was good to keep stuff dry! weights the main issue wanna keep it as light as pos.

    its abit like this

    but it wasnt as expensive

  • For ages I was thinking I wanted a touring bike.
But then, for some strange reason, when I'd finally finished putting it together it was suddenly a bright pink, early '90s Merckx Corsa Extra.

Is it sacrilege to put a rear rack on that once in a while?
And are those rear axle-mounted faux rack mounts any good?

  • this looks alright for that price range...

dead link flash thing... if you search this code :540109 in the stores search thats what i was meant to post.

I think if it gets you from a-b with the shit you need, who gives a fuck what it looks like.

  • Kinda what I was thinking.
I'll use that as an excuse when Eddy comes hammering at my door.
    :)

I have a jack wolfskin tundra III for sale, used once. £125. Excellent tent, but my GF doesn't like touring, so I'm back to my one-man bivvi.

I got the jack wolfskin specifically because it's the only tent that has a porch big enough to take 2 bikes (just). One porch though. I think you'll struggle to find a 2 man tent with 2 porches.

  • i think i might know some one who might be interested in that fred.

Sounds wicked. It would depend on your required daily mileage. Did a bit in France over the summer on my fixed, 60 ish g.i it was fine, but we were in a flat area. Could not honk up the hills though had to stay sitting down as much as possible. I was carrying camping and cooking gear for two though plus my cloths in a rucksack, girlfriend just carried her cloths and the bike flight bag.

  • tommy how much did you cover in a day?

wanna tour? little one? maybe suffolk?

  • [Sigh.] My favourite thread. Ever. Its even boring enough to be truly a touring thread. I won't be getting a tourer til about five years' time. But I'll be planning it.

Let's plan our favourrite journies! I want to 'do' a ride all over the Somerset Levels, really really slowly. And also ride all up the east coast from essex to northumberland.

  • I really want to do along the South of France into Spain. As ridiculously light as possible.

  • that BJ is beautiful

i was looking at the possibility of getting a specialized tricross comp
quite a nice spec/weight/looking touring bike which would be a handy winter trainer too

  • I like the idea of doing something like that... but there's so many places in the UK i've got left to see. Literally on your doorstep. Downside is obviously the weather. HTFU

Biggest day was 54 miles I think, most of the time only 20 ish. We chilled alot.

Yeah sure. Would be fun. I'm building a more suitable bike at the moment, I have most of the bits just need to put it together.

sounds good... tour - the pace matches the company and the area.

  • fuck looking out of the window makes me want to quit right now!

  • Does anyone else seeing this think how nice it would be to have a touring bike? comfy ride, gears, proper gentlemens kit. sweeping through Europe with tent, the open road mmmmmmmm think i need to invest.
Definitely feel the urge to do some touring. Roberts would be an option, less common than BJ and Mercian and their based in Croydon. Bit expensive new though.

  • penzance > east. hilly but a truly amazing ride. to hell with the weather, I would jump on a train now if I could....

  • I really want to do London to Delhi. didn't make it all the way on the last try as was thwarted by the lack of Iranian visa. might go for it again next summer if funds allow.
