  • Can you change your site to load up an image when you hit the main page and the different menu items (as there is only photogpaphy on the first so why click?) as it's quite slow to load (might be my connection) then you get a message about no images in public domain.. slightly confusing..

  • No point putting low quality glass on a decent body like the 5D. Should be L's all the way.

I've got a 5D and don't feel the need to Ls. Get fast primes (50mm f1.4, 85mm f1.8, etc) and they will see you fine.

the message is there for a reason.
thankfully 99% of the people i want to see it have insanely fast internet speeds.
it's going to be redone soon (hopefully)

  • mines been ordered, and i'm no12 on the waiting list so hopefully get one from the first shipment. can't wait to try out the HD

You lucky bastard, are you offloading your previous camera ?

The HD is stunning, full HD (not HDV) but it's unfortunately running at 30p (NTSC) and not 25p (PAL) - but Canon have apparently come under a lot of pressure from it's market to make supply a firmware update to enable 25p.

    (I hope!!)

How much are you paying for it ? Body only ? I am really considering one of these massive bastards !

  • Good luck with it, I'll be excited to see the results. Get hold of a nice external mic.. it'll improve things no end. Have you seen Vincents samples? (http://www.usa.canon.com/dlc/controller?act=GetArticleAct&articleID=2086) What am I talking about, who hasn't?! How much did you manage to preorder for?

Yeah I saw the Vincent Laforet thing last week, very cheesy little film, but you can see the potential, fantastic quality and low light footage that would be pretty much impossible with a video camera under £40,000.

    Madness I tell you, madness.

  • keeping the 5d, saves me renting a backup when shooting outside central london.
i have a cunning plan where i persuade a client to let me shoot inside their factory a 3-4 min loop of wonderfully shot and lit HD to run on the big plasma's in the showroom. i'll shoot it for free and if they like it they can pay (which will cover the new mac-pro and final cut lite)
body only shoud be about 1600-1700 +vat which is a bargain IMHO

  • True, the faster non L primes are ok. It's the zooms that you get a huge difference. Recent non L lens' are not really designed for full frame sensors...so their lack of optical quality does show.

  • the 5D is a seriously awesome piece of kit for the price. The only down side I can think of is that when you shoot movies, doesn't it compress to h264? Would be nice to be able to choose a difference compresser, maybe even uncompressed if you have the storage. Anyway, for a kind of freebie extra, mustn't grumble! :)
Just need to raise some cash to buy one now....;)

Fuck me that's cheap, Jessops are knocking the out the body only for £2300 ! You are getting yours up to £700 cheaper !

Do they have any more at that price, sort me out and I will let you use my Steadicam Merlin (pretty much ideal size for a DSLR) for your HD shoot, seriously !!

    :)

You might need a Steadicam Merlin as the 5D mk11 is a CMOS sensor so jellocam™ and skew are very real problems - although they are nowhere near as bad as some video camera, even RED has CMOS skew problems.

H264 is a pretty decent codec, and Canon are shoving it through at around 40Mbps (!!!) - but I have seen a few compression artefacts even at that data rate, but I reckon you could loose most of these with good considered shooting and a bit of post.

Would be nice to be able to choose a difference compresser, maybe even uncompressed if you have the storage.

You might (jury is still out) be able to take a feed through the HDMI output and capture uncompressed.

  • you didn't see the +vat :-)
seen them for 1600+vat on some german pro dealer websites

  • I find the whole Canon range a little confusing now. I'd quite like another DSLR (my 10D was shit when it came out) but I've no idea which one is the most suibtable.

I've got decent cameras for stuff that matters.

  • No point putting low quality glass on a decent body like the 5D. Should be L's all the way.

thought it's not necessary, you don't need L glasses to get expectional shot.

unless you're gonna blow the image into a huge print the size of a billboard, it's moot, I have an old wonky 28mm lens and an 50mm lens both scratched to piece yet still yield me the result I needed.

  • even some of the L's aren't up to 21mp particularly the wide zooms. 24-70 is ok the 70-200 is great.
the 90tse is exceptionally good. (and not an 'L') they all get soft if you stop down to far though.
these things are a factor if they are going to repro.

  • True, it's all about what you actually use the camera for....

in the end, the camera is just a lightbox after all. nothing special.

  • just checked - its all working ok

    its 3.5 @ 28 and 5.6@200

Comes with a cheapo hoya UV filter and a petal shaped hood.

Was thinking of something in the region of £50 - they seem to go on ebay for 60-70
Unless you have anything interesting to swap?

  • Some of the pentax SMC M series are of the highest quality, certainly improve on most L zooms. Girl next to me at gig tonight had the 35mm L, would be lovely for low light work.

    That's still £1880 compared to £2300.

I can't afford that kind of thing right now, but I might make plans.

Anyone want to buy a baby, male, 6 months old, all working order, hardly used - £1880.

    fixed

  • zoom lenses = gears.

ok in their place but sub-optimal

prime FTW but the zoom is quite flexible at time.

  • I have a 17-35L, but you can't have it. I just wanted to boast about it.

Really? REEEEEALLLY? I think I'm going to have to wait until I see in the flesh or at least a few more videos but it is still making me think I might sell off my XL2 and my 450D and stick my name on the waiting list...
