2 forks from 1 headset

Posted on
  • Does anyone run two forks off the same headset?
I'd like to have one fork for road, one for track from the same old threaded campag headset.
(Don't want to drill the orig forks nor use a clamp on brake)
But I'm beginning to wonder if it's a good idea as I think finding a second correct crown race is going to be problematic.
Also I'm getting confused about which size crown race I'll need.
The Verniers seem to put it at 26.8mm but I read somewhere the Campy standard was 26.4mm.
Is removing the crown race from the fork the only accurate way of measuring?
    Any help gratefully received.

  • PITA really, and you have to adjust the bearings every time you change..

I just drilled my fork and got on with it.

or leave the bike at the velodrome (HH? for £30 a year)

  • would probably make more sense if you're running threadless with cartridge bearings, not so with threaded forks. i wouldn't want to get grease on my hands so often and i dont fancy knackering the threads either.

  • Thanks.
It does seem to be more trouble than it's worth.

  • I thought this thread was a sequel to 2 girls 1 cup.
    Disappointed.

  • Following RPM's suggestion: here are my forks.

They have a groove/ridge on the front that would make it difficult to fit a brake to.
Ignoring the issue of whether i SHOULD drill them - what I'd like to know is if it's possible to drill them adequately and fit a brake.
    Thanks.

  • I occaisionally swap forks on my road bike from carbon to steel. The headset (FSA) comes with a split crown race which makes it easy to slide off and on again.

well they look OK for drilling, I have seen grooved crowns like that drilled before.
the problem would be brake caliper drop..

you need to put a wheel in, and measure directly from that groove in the crown to the braking surface of the rim.

If that is within the realms of your caliper's adjustment, or any short-reach caliper's range then you should be OK.

It's also worth dropping into see a frame builder (or knowledgeable shop) to confirm they are safe to drill!
