    They have a groove/ridge on the front that would make it difficult to fit a brake to.
    Ignoring the issue of whether i SHOULD drill them - what I'd like to know is if it's possible to drill them adequately and fit a brake.

    well they look OK for drilling, I have seen grooved crowns like that drilled before.
    the problem would be brake caliper drop..

    you need to put a wheel in, and measure directly from that groove in the crown to the braking surface of the rim.

    If that is within the realms of your caliper's adjustment, or any short-reach caliper's range then you should be OK.

    It's also worth dropping into see a frame builder (or knowledgeable shop) to confirm they are safe to drill!
